Metric Measurement Ms. Nugent Sci 9 Transition

Metric Units Scientists use metric units of measurement. Scientists use metric units of measurement. USA: only country that uses different units USA: only country that uses different units Why? Metric is easier Why? Metric is easier –Based off increments (spaces) of 10

Basic Units Liter – measures volume Liter – measures volume Meter – measures distance or length Meter – measures distance or length Gram – measures mass ( a little different than weight) Gram – measures mass ( a little different than weight)

Prefixes We use prefixes to modify the basic unit of measurement (meter, liter or gram) We use prefixes to modify the basic unit of measurement (meter, liter or gram) Common prefixes: Common prefixes: –Kilo (1000) –Milli (1/1000 or a thousandth) –Centi (1/100 or a hundredth)

Mass The gram The gram Vocab: Vocab: –Triple beam balance –Weight = mass and gravity  Unit: Newton  Gravity = 9.8 m/s 2

Distance The Meter The Meter –Meterstick = 1 meter = 1 m  Measures average distances or lengths –Kilometer = km  Measures large long distances (similar to miles) –Centimeter= cm  Measures small lengths –Millimeter = mm  Measures very small lengths (just enough to see)

How to measure length Your last number is an estimation. Read all the lines, and then estimate the next set of lines. For example: Your last number is an estimation. Read all the lines, and then estimate the next set of lines. For example: 4 cm measured 4 cm measured.4 cm estimated Between lines Total: 4.4 cm 8 millimeters measured 0 millimeters estimated Total: 8.0 mm

Volume Liter Liter –We will focus on liters or milliliters  aka cubic centimeters –1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter –1 mL = 1 cm 3

Graduated Cylinder Measure from the meniscus Measure from the meniscus –Bottom of the water line

Measuring by difference Sometimes we need to measure odd things or distances. Sometimes we need to measure odd things or distances. –We can’t start from zero So, we take a beginning measurement (like 3.4 m) and subtract it from a second measurement ( like 5.6 m) So, we take a beginning measurement (like 3.4 m) and subtract it from a second measurement ( like 5.6 m) 5.6 – 3.4 =2.2 m total 5.6 – 3.4 =2.2 m total
