1 Chapter 13 Properties of Matter

2 What is Matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) is considered matter.

3 Mass Balance! The amount of matter in a object is its MASS.
It is measured with a The base unit is the GRAM. The more matter in the object the more mass it has. Balance!

4 Which has more mass?

5 What is weight? Weight is the pull of gravity on an object’s mass. It is measured with a Weight depends on the pull of gravity. It can change with location! scale!

6 What would you weigh on the moon???
You would weigh 1/6 of what you weigh on Earth! Would your mass change on the moon? On which planet would you weigh the most?

7 JUPITER!! WHY???

8 VOLUME Graduated cylinder milliliters
The amount of space an object takes up is called VOLUME. Volume can be measured with a Graduated cylinder The base unit in the metric system is the LITER but when you use a graduated cylinder what is the unit? milliliters

9 Volume can be calculated.
If the object is a regularly shaped object, measurements can be used to calculate the volume. Like a box!

10 You need to know a formula!
Volume of a box: Volume = L x W x H What is the volume of this box? 120 cm3 What are the units? It depends on what the units for each dimension is!!

11 Reading Graduated Cylinders
The water/liquid in a graduated cylinders makes a curve. It is called a MENISCUS. Always read the volume from the BOTTOM of the curve! Make sure you are eye level with the meniscus.

12 What are these volumes?

13 What if the object is irregularly shaped? (like a rock)
To find the volume of an irregularly shaped object, you use a method called: volume displacement

14 What’s the volume of these items?

15 Length or Distance The base unit for length in the metric system is the METER. It is abbreviated with a m. Length/distance measurements are made using a RULER or METERSTICK!

16 Meterstick MILLIMETERS (mm). There are 1000 mm in a meter!
There are 100 centimeters (cm) in 1 meter. Think about there are 100 cents in a dollar! Smaller divisions are on the meterstick – MILLIMETERS (mm). There are 1000 mm in a meter!
