Measurements 9/15/10

SI Units International System of Units Based on powers of 10
Metric System Based on powers of 10 Decimal system Composed of base units and prefixes that indicates the relationship to the base unit.

SI Base Units--Temperature
Measured in degrees Celsius (°C) For water, freezing temp is 0°C and boiling temp is 100°C

SI Base Units--Length Measured in meters (m) Metric Units
1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) Which is larger? 1 meter or 105 centimeters 4 kilometers or 4400 meters

SI Base Units--Mass Measured in grams (g) Metric Units
1 Kilogram (km) = 1000 Grams (g) 1 Gram (g) = 1000 Milligrams (mg) Which is larger? 1 kilogram or 1500 grams 1200 milligrams or 1 gram

SI Base Units--Volume Measured in liters (L) Metric Units
1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 milliliter (mL) = 1 cm3 (or cc) = 1 gram* Which is larger? 1 liter or 1500 milliliters 200 milliliters or 1.2 liters

SI Prefixes Kilo- = 1000 of the base unit
Hecta- = 100 of the base unit Deca- = 10 of the base unit BASE UNIT (g, L, m) Deci- = 0.1 of the base unit (1/10th) Centi- = 0.01 of the base unit (1/100th) Milli- = of the base unit (1/1000th)
