1/9/12 Turn in any paperwork & Get out your M&M lab. Do-Now: In your warm up section on a blank sheet of paper, draw the picture illustrated on the side board. Make it fill the entire page. In the smallest circle, write the word cell. In the larger circle, write down everything you know about cells. In the rectangle, write down where you learned it.

What do you study in Biology? Write down your definition of biology. Be prepared to share your definition.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, how would you determine living things from nonliving things? Make a list of the characteristics that ALL living things have in common.

1.Are made up of CELLS. A.UNICELLULAR (made of 1 cell) B.MULTICELLULAR (made of 2 or more cells) –Multicellular organisms go through DIFFERENTIATION (become different from one another). Living things: Characteristics of Living Things

2.ORGANIZATION A. Nucleic Acids-DNA/RNA B. Proteins-amino acids C. Carbohydrates-monosaccharides D. Lipids-fatty acids Complex Chemical Compounds

Organization continued:

3.Use ENERGY. (Metabolism) A.Nutrition(get energy) –(1) producer (AUTOTROPH) –(2) consumer (HETEROTROPH) B.Respiration (process of releasing energy from food) C.Use Energy (1)Excretion(process of removing waste from the organism)

Use energy continued (2)Transport (process of absorbing & moving materials through the organism) (3)Synthesis (process by which simple molecules are combined to make more complex ones)

4. HOMEOSTASIS Respond to changes in both the internal & external environment What are some examples of homeostasis? (List them in your notes!)

5. GROWTH Cell Division –Ex. Binary Fission, Mitosis, Meiosis Development –Ex. Puberty

6.REPRODUCE ASEXUAL-does not combine genetic information SEXUAL-requires 2 parts of genetic material to be combined

You can remember the characteristics of living things by: GRECHO –Growth & Development –Reproduction –Energy Use (Metabolism) –Cells –Homeostasis –Organization

A virus is described as being composed of a protein coat and a nucleic acid core. It attaches to a cell and causes the cell to make more viruses. It does not need food. It can be crystallized. Would you conclude that a virus is living or nonliving? EXPLAIN WHY!

How is a burning candle similar to a living thing? How is it different? List similarities and differences. Be prepared to share your list.
