2 What makes something living?
Living things are also known as organisms. Which of these are not organisms?

3

4 Organization All living things are made of CELLS!
Organisms may be one-celled (UNIcellular) or many-celled (MULTIcellular). Multicellular organisms are organized: The same type of CELLS make- up TISSUES, different tissues make-up ORGANS, different organs make-up ORGAN SYSTEMS which act together to ensure survival of the organism. This organization allows living things to maintain homeostasis.

5 Chemicals of Life/Biomolecules
Nucleic Acids, genetic materials Carbohydrates, main energy source for the body Lipids, fats and building material of the cell membrane Proteins, found in cell processes and builds parts of the cell

6 Use Energy All organisms need energy.
Some organisms make their own energy. These organisms are called AUTOtrophs. Why would autotrophs be important to heterotrophs? What does it mean to say that the Sun powers life on earth? Some organisms take in materials and break this down to release energy that is used by the cells. These organisms are known as HETEROtrophs. The chemical reactions that break down materials for energy or builds up materials for energy is called metabolism.

7 Responds to Stimulus STIMULUS, something in the environment that causes a change in an organism’ s behavior RESPONSE, reaction because of the stimulus

8 Grow and Development Growth is simply becoming larger.
In multicellular organisms, more cells are added. In unicellular organisms, the single cell becomes larger. Development is changes that occur as the organism grows, change in abilities. Can you give examples?

9 Reproduction All living things produce offspring or young. Without offspring, a species would cease to exist. Reproduction may be asexual, meaning only one parent. The offspring or young will be genetically identical to the parent. Reproduction may be sexual, meaning there are two parents. The offspring or young will look like a combination of the two parents.

10 things?

11 Food Food is the energy source for organisms.
RECALL: Organisms that make their own food are called __________. RECALL: Organisms that can NOT make their own food are called ___.

12 Water Water is necessary to obtain chemicals, break down (dissolve) food, grow and transport materials through the body. Your blood is mainly water. Blood transports needed materials and helps get rid of waste materials in the body.

13 Shelter Organisms need a place to live.
An organism’s living space should meet all needs of that organism.

14 Means of Keeping a Stable INTERNAL Environment
This is HOMEOSTASIS. Basically, everything “works” together inside and outside (factors) of an organism to maintain homeostasis (balance) fro that organism.
