Marriage Rutherford married Lucy Ware Webb. She was the youngest daughter of Dr. James and Maria Cook Webb. A graduate of Cincinnati's Wesleyan Women's College. She was the first wife of a president to graduate from college. They became the parents of eight children.

Before Becoming The President Hayes practiced law in Fremont and was city solicitor of Cincinnati. When the Civil War began, Hayes left his political career to join the Union Army. Wounded five times, most seriously at the Battle of South Mountain, he earned a reputation for bravery in combat and was promoted to the rank of major general. After the war, he served in the U.S. Congress from 1865 to Hayes left Congress to run for Governor of Ohio and was elected to two terms. When his second term had ended, he resumed the practice of law for a time, but returned to politics in 1875 to serve a third term as governor.

The Election In 1876, Hayes was elected president in one of the most contentious and hotly disputed elections in American history. He lost the popular vote to, Democrat Samuel J. Tilden, nevertheless Hayes won the presidency by the narrowest of margins after a Congressional commission awarded him twenty disputed electoral votes. The result was the Compromise of 1877, in which the Democrats acquiesced to Hayes's election and Hayes accepted the end of military occupation of the South.

After His Term The President continued to be concerned with minorities, the poor, and immigrants. He believed that education and manual training would help all people achieve better lives. Hayes' honesty and fairness renewed respect for the presidential office. Honoring his commitment not to accept a second term, Hayes retired to his beautiful home in Fremont, Ohio. There, Hayes continued to give of his time helping veterans to receive their pensions, improving conditions in prisons, and promoting universal education. He died at Fremont, Ohio on January 17, 1893, at the age of seventy.
