2. The presidents from 1868 to 1911 played a large role in this time period for this was the beginning of the modernization of America, advances in technology, the fair treatment of others, and the movement westward.

3. Ulysses S. Grant Who was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He served as President from 1869 to 1877. During his two terms he admitted Colorado as a state in 1876, readmitted the last of the seceded states in 1870 and ratified the 15th amendment on the same year. He came to be President by popular vote from his victory has a famous war general in the civil war. In one of his terms a he allowed a African American to be part of congress, The actions that took place during his term would set the foundation for America becoming what it is today.

4. Rutherford B. Hayes The next President who was the 19th was Rutherford B. Hayes. He was born on October 4, 1822 in Delaware Ohio. Before Hayes became President he worked as a lawyer for the Republican Party settling anti-slavery law suits. Rutherford’s Wife (Lucy Hayes) was the first President’s wife to be educated in collage. His first entrance into the world of politics was when he was convinced to run for the House of Representatives and won by a landslide. He later ran for president and during his term he passed a law that allowed woman to appear before the Supreme Court furthering woman’s rights in America.

5. James Garfield James Garfield was the 20th President of the U.S.A. In his short term of just 200 days from his swear in office (March 4, 1881) to the day he was assassinated (July 2, 1881) by a man named Charles J. Guiteau. He was the second of four presidents’ who would meet the same fate. During his presidency he appointed many African Americans to Federal positions. He first started in politics when hestarted in politics when he jointed the anti-slavery group of Republican where he served for nine terms in the House of Representatives all after one another

6. Chester A. Arthur 1881-1885 Chester A. Arthur was president after the assassination of President James Garfield he served half of one term. He retired early because of his poor health close to the end of his term. In the words of Mark Twain “No duty was neglected in his administration, and no adventurous project alarmed the nation."

7. Grover Cleveland Next was President Grover Cleveland who served two non- consecutive terms (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). He won popular vote for President three times, but didn’t have the support of the Electoral College. Which in that time would be a feat of great progress, because he was a Democrat in a time when the Republicans were in “rule” from 1861 to 1913. This was a great win for his party. In his term he opposed tariffs. The next president was William McKinley. He served from 1897-1901, until he was assassinated. During his term and a half, he raised protective tariffs helping rising American industry and lowing inflation.

9. Theodore Roosevelt The final president was Theodore Roosevelt he was the leader of the Republican party. He served after the death of the former president (1902- 1911). He was famous author, explorer, and the founder of the progressive party. He was well know for his “cowboy” attitude and the book he wrote called “The Naval War of 1882.”

10. Closing These were the presidents of the start of modern America. All of these Presidents served and helped make an America what it is today.
