2 Ulysses S. Grant was the eighteenth president of the United States of America. Ulysses was first elected in 1869, after the Civil War, and held office until He served a second term from 1873 to Ulysses became a member of the Republican party in 1868.

3 Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, His parents were Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant. The family moved to Georgetown, Ohio the next year. There, Ulysses went to city schools and helped on his father’s farm until he was 17 years old. Then, he went to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He was accidentally entered as Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses was a great horse rider, and showed some interest in mathematics. He graduated in 1843 as 21st in his class with a rank of quartermaster.

Ulysses S. Grant was present during the Mexican-American War in Although he was only a quartermaster, he managed to see most of the battles, and even fought in a few. The war ended in Ulysses resigned from the military a short time after. He tried unsuccessfully to get other jobs, so he rejoined the army during the Civil War. Ulysses began as brigadier general, but soon became the general of the Union Army. He forced the Confederate general, Robert E. Lee, to surrender in 1865.

Grant was elected for his second term as president, after Horace Greeley, his opponent, died. This time, Ulysses’ vice president was Henry Wilson. Grant tried to be nominated for a third term, but it was instead given to James Garfield. After this, Grant went on a world tour, but discovered that he had cancer. He wrote a group of memoirs, and died on July 23, Ulysses S. Grant had few special interests as president. He mostly enjoyed horse riding.

Ulysses S. Grant was an average president. He was popular due to winning the Civil War. Ulysses only made a few important decisions in his terms. Ulysses was opposed to slavery, as he fought in the Union Army, and made many advances in civil rights for African Americans and Indian tribes. He also helped to ensure that all people had the right to vote. Grant signed many acts to help the current economy. The main act was the Resumption of Specie Act in This allowed paper money to be exchanged for gold and silver coins. Ulysses S. Grant was remembered in history. He appears on the fifty dollar bill, and his old farm is still standing, open to the public.

8 There were many problems during Ulysses S. Grant’s terms as president
There were many problems during Ulysses S. Grant’s terms as president. Many groups were in existence that opposed the citizenship of African Americans. They especially tried to remove their right to vote. Grant had a lot of trust in his friends and cabinet members. However, many of his workers soon became corrupted. Even the vice president, Schuyler Colfax, was involved in one scandal.
