TEAM 7D Science & Social Studies: Mrs. Irwin Math & Social Studies: Mrs. Peerless Language Arts & Social Studies: Ms. White Reading & Social Studies: Mrs. Suggs

Science – Mrs. Irwin Units: Ecology Cells and Heredity Adaptations over time Science Fair Project- required for Advanced Cell projects after Christmas break

Social Studies We will be discussing the following regions:  Southwest Asia (the Middle East)  Asia  Africa  Region highlights:  Geography  Culture  History  Government  Religion  Economy  Students will complete several projects throughout the year. All projects count as test grades.

Social Studies  Current Events  We have current event assignments for each unit of study. Expect about 2-3 current events per unit.  These should be from a reliable news source. Students must document the source used.  Common Core  Our areas of study did not change, but the type of questions on the test have changed.  More critical thinking is required with written response questions instead of just multiple choice.

Math – Mrs. Peerless  Topics of Study:  Numbers and Operations  Expressions & Equations  Geometry  Probability  Process Skills  Placement for 8 th grade is based on the county rubric which includes:  Yearly Average  Previous Standardized Tests Scores

Think Through Math - TTM Replaced Successmaker. I strongly encourage students to use extra class time and literacy to do TTM.  Students can access this program from home.  If students complete 10 lessons (pre to post test) in 9 weeks, they will receive an extra credit quiz grade. Other Information:  I offer tutoring as needed. Students must see me to schedule this and get a pass for the agenda.  If a student fails a quiz or test, test corrections are allowed. The highest grade they will receive is a 75%.

Reading  Reading Logs are different. Students record passed RC quizzes for each term. Parents will sign those instead of the weekly log.  Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) – determines Lexile scores  Reading Counts (RC)  Millionaire Book Club  Spanish placement for 8 th grade  Based on county rubric  Reading average and standardized test scores are a part of the rubric.  Students may read novels 100 points below their lexile. There is not a limit on how high they may go.  Students with lexiles above 1000 may read 950 level books and above.  Advanced-4 independent RC books per term.  On-Level-3 independent RC book per term.  Independent reading grade (IR)- weekly grade for in class/media center reading time.

Book Fair  October 5 th – 9 th (7:30 A.M.-4 P.M.)  Proceeds help buy new books for our Media Center  Mrs. West is in need of parent volunteers.  her or stop by tonight to get the volunteer paperwork.

Language Arts – Ms. White  Grammar  We will focus on the use of correct grammar/mechanics to improve writing.  Vocabulary/ Spelling  We will have alternating vocabulary & spelling lessons weekly.  Writing  Writing Process through personal narrative  Informational/Expository Writing  Persuasive/argumentative Writing  Technical Writing

7 th Grade Reminders  Sign agenda daily and make sure your student is writing essential items!  Send a note when a student is absent  Checkout the website for teacher pages, homework, contact information, etc.  is the best way for contact. We can check several times a day.  7 th grade behavior point card is on page 10. Please review this weekly to help us maximize your child’s success.

7 th Grade Information Continued  GO – Grizzly Opportunity. Students failing Reading and Math at first quarter progress report or any report card will enter GO.  Other screening tests may also place students into GO.  Benchmarks for all subjects are now test grades.  You can find a link to current standards for all subjects on the county website if you would like more details about the current curriculum.

THANK YOU FOR COMING!
