How to Make Foldables See page 758 in textbook for construction of a Foldable. Read the pink directions to determine how many sheets of paper are needed.

Foldable Directions Exploring Physical Science 1.1 Begin a 2 sheet Foldable, entitled “Exploring Physical Science, 1.1”. See page 758 for construction of a Foldable. Write the titles for each tab in colored marker or colored pencil, along with the textbook page you should begin reading on. Make sure you read the textbook, don’t just look for answers! Cut the individual, pink instruction for each Tab and glue or tape directly onto the bottom portion of each Tab.(The instructions should not be seen when the Foldable is closed.) Extra credit may be given for neatness, readability, organization, or creativity. Remember, this Foldable is being constructed by you, FOR you, to reinforce your learning. Study while constructing! Tab 1: What is Science? p 6/ 1. Define science.; 2. Explain what science is NOT; 3. Explain what can cause scientific knowledge to change; 4. Explain what is often the first step in gathering knowledge; 5. Define technology; 6. Give an example of science that has been used to develop technology. Tab 2: What is Physical Science?, p 7/ 1. Define physical science; 2. Define matter; 3. Give an example and picture of matter; 4. Define energy; 5. Give an example and picture of a form of energy. Tab 3: Chemistry and Physics; Branches of Physical Science, p 8/ 1. Define chemistry; 2. Give an example and picture; 3. Define physics; 4. Give example and picture;

How to construct a Foldable Copy the title of the Foldable on the front of the Foldable. This should be colorful and should include the word title as well as the Chapter and Section. Ex: Exploring Physical Science 1.1

General Directions Don’t forget to put your name in the upper right hand corner of the title page! Also, write my name so that if you lose it, it may be returned. Anne Smith Science, 2 nd Period Mrs. Bolin

General Directions Write the titles for each tab in colored pencil or colored marker, along with the textbook page you should begin reading on. (Make sure your marker doesn’t bleed through.) (Write everything up to the forward slash.) Tab 1: What is Science? p 6/ 1. Define science.; 2. Explain what science is NOT; 3. Explain Tab 1: What is Science?, p 6 Tab 2: What is Physical Science?, p 7 Tab 3: Chemistry and Physics; Branches of Physical Science, p 8

Directions Cut the individual, pink instruction for each Tab and glue or tape directly onto the bottom portion of each Tab. The instructions should not be seen when the Foldable is closed.) Tab 1: What is Science? p 6/ 1. Define science.; 2. Explain what science is NOT; 3. Explain what can cause scientific knowledge to change; 4. Explain what is often the first step in gathering knowledge; 5. Define technology; 6. Give an example of science that has been used to develop technology. Tab 2: What is Physical Science?, p 7/ 1. Define physical science; 2. Define matter; 3. Give an example and picture of matter; 4. Define energy; 5. Give an example and picture of a form of energy. Tab 3: Chemistry and Physics; Branches of Physical Science, p 8/ 1. Define chemistry; 2. Give an example and picture; 3. Define physics; 4. Give example and picture;

Directions Make sure you read the textbook, don’t just look for answers! Also review any labs and notes completed in class.

Directions Organization of your answers will help you use this to study from. Write neatly- print or type- in complete sentences. Leave spaces in between questions. Use all of the space to write your answers- don’t have all the writing up at the top with a sea of empty space below. Extra credit may be given for neatness, readability, organization, or creativity.

Directions Remember, this Foldable is being constructed by you, FOR you, to reinforce your learning. Study while constructing!

Plan Before You Start How can you plan it out so that all the answers are not crowded into the upper part? Look to see how many questions there are; also check to see if there will be any pictures included. Suppose there are 6 questions and no pictures in the directions for Tab 1, I would plan to put three of the answers on the top portion and the other three on the bottom portion.

Example: Tab 1: Question 1 –Define Science Read starting on page 6, to find the answer. 1. Science is the process of gathering knowledge about the natural world.

Example; Tab 1; Question 2 2. Explain what science is NOT. When you read the science book, you did not find this answer. Hopefully you will remember that this was talked about during class, so review Labsheet 1.1.

Example; Tab 1; Question 2 Science is the process of gathering knowledge about the natural world; it is NOT merely a set of facts. Often the knowledge that is obtained through science is used to create things that we can use to make our lives better and work easier. These things are called technology. An example of this is: Science obtained the knowledge that the sun emits heat and light energy. This knowledge was then used to develop solar panels (cells) that convert solar light energy into electricity which powers things such as solar calculators, which make their uses a lot more convenient. Today we are hoping that someone is going to be able to use science knowledge to come up with a better energy source for cars than gasoline.

Example; Tab 1; Question 3 Explain what can cause scientific knowledge to change. You may not be able to find every answer in the book or labsheet- but would be something we have discussed in class.

General Directions Save ALL Foldables in a safe place at home. You will be asked to study and show them at the end of the year. Obtain a cereal box, expanding file folder, etc. to keep all your Foldables. You will be using them to: Study for quizzes Study for chapter tests Study for the District Final which covers all Foldables from Day 1. Use them to review for the 8 th grade Science MCA’s
