Do Now 3/14 1.Copy down this week’s homework. 2.Put page 3, your tech rubric in the In Box. Make sure your name is on it! 3.Clear your desk and collect a test blind. MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday -Complete SEM Unit Cover Page on p83 -Study your knowledge map -SEM 1 ALL- SEM 2 #21-SEM 2 All

Post-assessment 1.To see what you have learned so far. 2.Does not count toward your grade.

Post-assessment 1.Complete short answer. 2.Collect multiple choice questions up front. 3.Staple the BUBBLE SHEET on top of your short answer questions and turn in. 4.Neatly return test blind. 5.Silently complete Sun-Earth-Moon Cover Page on pg 83 – Title, Pictures, Entire page is colored

82 83 Sun, Earth, Moon On this page do you have: -Unit title -Drawings that relate to the unit -Color the whole page  every cm should have color  No markers (they bleed through the page)

HW: Sun-Earth-Moon Unit Cover Page on pg 83 PUSH IN YOUR CHAIR!!! Reminder

Do Now 3/15 1. Get a Moon Log from up front. Tape on NB p. 91 (It is already trimmed) 2.Get SEM 1 Trim & tape on p. 93 3.Clean up 4.Update table of contents 5.Do you have your new textbook?

Moon Logs Observe the moon every day for a month. We will be filling out the log at the start of class every day. If you were absent you will have to do it on your own. You need to: – draw a picture (shading=dark part of the moon). – Record the rise and set times – Record the name of the phase

Today’s Moon Log http://www.timebie.com/moon/seattlewa.php Use page 68-69 in your textbook to determine the name of the phase. 2:02 am 11:36 am Third quarter yes 10:57 AM 1:21 AM Waxing crescent

82 83 Sun, Earth, Moon On this page do you have: -Unit title -Drawings that relate to the unit -Color the whole page  every cm should have color  No markers (they bleed through the page)

84 85 SEM Scientific Principles What causes the daily, monthly, and yearly patterns I see on Earth?

86 87 SEM CFUs SEM Test

Earth in Space This unit we are starting with Earth’s position in space. What is the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon and what affect does this have on Earth? Why does the Earth look so different than the other planets?

SEM 1 Work on SEM 1 number 1: In the boxes below use words and labeled pictures to record what you know about what causes – day/night – Seasons – moon phases – eclipses  5 minutes of silent work time.

-Choose 1 of your boxes to demonstrate to your table group. Star that box. -Each person should demonstrate their idea to the group.  Each person in the table group should ask the person who is modeling 1 question. Push your thinking and theirs! – Does your model make sense? – Can you model & explain everything about the sun-earth-moon system? – What might be missing in your explanation?

The Sun, Earth, Moon System

Notes on page 93 The sun is the only star in our solar system. Galaxies are made up of billions of stars. Earth is in the Milky Way galaxy. The universe is made up of billions of galaxies. Star (Sun)  Solar System  Galaxy (Milky Way)  Universe

Do Now 3/17 1.Complete your moon log for today. 2. Pick up SEM 2 – NB pgs 94-95 3. Swap, highlight, and grade SEM 1

SEM 2 1.First thoughts: Remember to answer the question on the top of the lab 2.Learning Target: “I can use evidence to infer the causes of day, night, and seasons.” 3.Update table of contents. 4.Clean up area

Turn to your elbow partner How is a scale model different than a model? – In a scale model all the sizes and distances are in proper proportion to each other.

Scale Models

Creating a scale model of the Sun-Earth- Moon system

How do the Moon and Earth Compare? – Size? – Distance?

1.Work with your group to decide which of the spheres in the lab box represents the size of the Moon, if the Earth was the size of the globe. 2.Measure the diameters of the Earth and the Moon you chose. 3.Place the Earth and the Moon so that it represents what you believe to be the scale distance between the two and measure the distance between them. SEM 2

To measure diameter

4.Draw a diagram of your model and label: a.The diameters of the Earth and the Moon b.The distance between them  What units do we use?  Centimeters (cm)  How many centimeters in a meter?  100!

Now…

SEM 2: Discussion Which spheres did you choose and why?  You agree because… (can you add more evidence?)  You disagree because… How far away is the moon in your model? How much larger would that make the Earth than the moon? Why do the sun and moon appear to be the same size in the sky?

Now… SEM 2 6.Read Scaling the Sun-Earth-Moon System on pages 18-21 and respond to the questions using complete sentences where appropriate.

HW: SEM 2 #21 PUSH IN YOUR CHAIR!!! Reminder

Do Now 3/18 1. Complete your moon log for today and this weekend.

A different view of Earth

Now 1.As a group work on SEM 2 2.If you are done, study your knowledge map.

HW: SEM 2 ALL PUSH IN YOUR CHAIR, Please! Reminder
