 The four main directions found on a compass ◦ North ◦ East ◦ South ◦ West

 Half the world  4 Hemispheres ◦ Northern ◦ Southern ◦ Eastern ◦ Western  The USA is in Both the Northern & Western Hemispheres

 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water  29% covered with land

 Most of the Earth is covered by four large bodies of water called Oceans ◦ Atlantic ◦ Pacific ◦ Indian ◦ Arctic

 Why did settlers choose Rochester? Here are three hints.

 Settlers chose Rochester because of the proximity to Lake Ontario, The Genesee River, and the Erie Canal!  Also, High Falls gave the city power!

 Materials used to uncover information about history  Two types  What are some examples?

 Materials on a topic on which later studies are based.  “At the Scene”  Letters, diaries, photos, sculpture, artifacts

 Accounts written by people who were NOT “at the scene”  Based on primary sources  Textbooks, biographies

 Using the textbook (pages xxxii-xxxiii the front of the book), create a poster about the themes of geography.  On your paper please answer the following questions for EACH theme:  1) Define the theme (5)  2) Draw a picture explaining what the theme is  3) Also have the definition of geography on the poster  This will count as a TEST GRADE!!!!

 In your notebook or on a sheet of paper answer the following questions:  Give an example of a primary source AND Secondary source

 Artifact – Remains of human-made objects.  Culture – A people’s unique way of life  Hominid – Creature that walks upright

 Paleolithic Age – “Old Stone Age” where humans used tools  Neolithic Age – “New Stone Age” where humans began farming  Homo Sapiens – Modern humans like you and me
