Chapter 2 Study Guide Study for your test!

Know the following vocabulary words:

instinct- A set of actions that a living thing is born with and doesn’t need to learn.

vertebrate- An animal with a backbone

endoskeleton- An internal supporting structure

heredity- The passing of traits from parent to offspring

life span- How long an organism can be expected to live

inherited behavior- A pattern of behavior that requires no thinking because it is programmed into an animal’s brain.

exoskeleton- A hard covering that protects the bodies of some invertebrates.

learned behavior- A behavior that is not inborn.

life cycle- The stages of growth and change an organism goes through.

invertebrate- An animal without a backbone.

complete metamorphosis- A life cycle including four stages of growth: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Fill in the blanks.

Symmetry refers to a body’s _________________. Shape

The largest group of invertebrates is ____________________. arthropods

Hollow bones help birds to _______________. Fly

Molting allows an insect to ________________. Grow

Know the difference between warm blooded and cold blooded Know the difference between warm blooded and cold blooded. Be able to give examples of both.

Warm blooded: An animal whose body temperature does not change much Mammals, birds, horses

Cold blooded: An animal that can’t control its body temperature Reptile, fish, amphibians

Be able to identify at least one fact about each of the following animal groups.

Reptile Vertebrate Cold blooded Live on land dry, scaly skin

Amphibian Vertebrate Cold blooded Live on land and in water Moist smooth skin

Bird Vertebrate Warm blooded Feathers Beaks 2 legs with clawed feet

Mammal Vertebrate Warm blooded Have fur or hair Care for their offspring

arthropod Invertebrate Exoskeleton Jointed legs Body divided into sections

What are the steps of complete metamorphosis of a butterfly.

Pupa larva adult egg

Penguins Life Cycle Newly hatched chick Adult penguin egg Young penguin

Life span vs. Life Cycle An animal’s life span is how long the animal is expected to live and .. An animal’s life cycle is the stages of growth and change an organism goes through. Make your essay based on these facts!

Draw a line of symmetry! yes No
