UPTAP Research Findings

Round 2 Commissioning UPTAP Round 2 call resulted in 32 applications as follows: 2 Postdoctoral Fellowships 6 Mid-career Fellowships 15 Small Grants 9 Large Grants Commissioning meeting in May 2007

Workshop in 2007 at ONS Centre of Demography Jonathan Swan (Head of Population Estimates and Electoral Statistics Unit, ONS) suggests: “public session where the sets of UPTAP researchers might present their findings to the wider community and take questions/issues. If you and the ESRC did like this idea, we, that is the ONS Centre for Demography, may be able to host here in Titchfield, as we have a seminar room that can accommodate 100 people”. Date to be arranged - possibly September (not July or August)

BSPS Conference 2007 University of St. Andrews Tuesday 11 - Thursday 13 September 2007 Website conference pages at: htm Provisional title plus abstract (up to 250 words) should be submitted by Tuesday 1 May 2007 Please submit by to John Stillwell 90 minute sessions with three papers per session. Maximum for an UPTAP strand would be 4 sessions, so that's 12 papers as an absolute maximum Enquiries: Anne Shepherd, BSPS Secretariat Any suggestions for plenary speakers? So far papers offered by Boyle, Coast, Norman, Rasulo

UPTAP meeting for Round 2 Projects Sometime in Autumn 2007 but this will depend on the start dates of the projects commissioned Possibly to coincide with the next Advisory Committee

UPTAP User Fellowships (Round 3) Hopefully there will be another call for UPTAP User Fellowships during autumn 2007 Will depend on availability of finance!

ESRC Media and Communications Training Workshop for UPTAP, 2007 Centre for Economic Policy Research, London (date to be decided) Run by Romesh Vaitilingham (writer and media consultant, CEP, ESRC, RES, ISER), Wendy Barnaby (freelance writer and broadcaster; editor of Science and Public Affairs) and Alister Scott (TheKnowledgeBridge) Content includes: effective research dissemination; how the press works; stories and press releases; how TV and radio work; being interviewed Will send round an asking for names of those interested Date will be announced

ESRC Festival of Social Science, 2008 Likely to be in March 2008 Some additional funding available (max £2,000) Activity funding application form (Guidelines available) to be submitted by beginning of December ESRC affiliation - Contact details - Activity details - Target audience - Activity type - Project summary (max. 200 words) - Cost breakdown ESRC prefer to have an organised bid from UPTAP rather than several bids from different projects

ESRC Research Methods Festival, June - 3 July 2008 St Catherine’s College, Oxford Organiser is Graham Crow (Deputy Director, NCRM, Southampton) Session volunteered on "Secondary Data Analysis for Understanding Population Trends and Processes" - based around a series of presentations from UPTAP researchers that highlight the secondary data research methods being used and involving User Fellows in particular

EAPS, Barcelona July 2008 at Hotel Alimara I offered to convene a session on behalf of UPTAP but EAPS have their own convenors and are in the process of finalizing the main topics Call for Abstracts coming soon Would like a good representation of UPTAP papers even if we don’t all present in the same session Contact: Helga de Valk

Any other ideas?
