What can you tell me about Poland?

 A KWL table is away of finding out what we know about a specific topic. What I knowWhat I want to know What I have learnt What do you know about the chosen topic? For example what can you tell me about Poland? What things do you need to find out? e.g. Where is the country, population etc Write down the new information you have learnt. Write here the answers to what you want to know.

 Students to Fill in KWL sheet. ◦ Just the first 2 columns to start with.  What do you know about Poland?  What would you like to know about Poland?

 Ideas for the middle column-What do you want/ need to know  Where is it situated?  Flag?  Capital?  Culture? Religion?  Language?  Diet?  National dress?  Any other interesting facts?

 Language-Polish  Currency – Zloty  Flag- red and white  Where- in Europe- borders Germany and Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania.  Climate- cold cloudy, moderately severe winters, mild summers, with frequent thunderstorms.  Capital- Warsaw  Religion % Catholic  Population- 39 million

 Diet- polish eat a lot of potatoes, breads and other flour based products, meat especially pork. They eat a lot of comfort foods made up of meat, vegetables and grains.  Including pickled vegetables (sauerkraut), curd cheese, sour milk, sour cream.  Potatoes have been the staple food in Poland for 300 years.

 It was the Polish who introduced Captain Cook to sauerkraut (which because it is pickled lasts along time and retains it vitamins- thus no scurvy on long voyages).  Settlement of Polish in NZ began in the 1840’s.  In 2006 there were just over 2000 Polish in NZ.

 This week you are going to have a go at making Polish Pancakes.  Filling could include: jam, sour cream, cooked apple, bacon, sauerkraut etc.  Come with your favourite toppings

 You have just seen an example of what you could do with regards to researching your country.  Now it is up to you!  How will you put your research together?  What facts will you use? What recipes will you find? And what will you create for the international Food Stall?  Looking forward to seeing your creations
