Englewood High School French 1 and 2 Instructor: Anne Odell September 14, 2015 Open House

Welcome to French 1 and 2. I am very happy that you are here! My goals for the open house: –To tell you a little bit about myself and my credentials. –To help you understand the work your child will be doing throughout the school year. –To explain my expectations of your child. –To share information about how you can support your child’s French language learning at home. Welcome Parents!

 This is my 16th year of teaching, and my 6 th year at Englewood High School. I've also taught at Sandalwood High School, and, before that, Fernandina Beach High School. I attended and graduated from Englewood High many years ago. I earned a Bachelors degree in French education at the University of South Florida, where I also completed coursework in English. I am certified to teach French and English.  I am the proud mother of three boys. My oldest graduated from high school in 2014 and lives in Louisiana. My younger boys, ages 6 and 9 live with me and attend Spring Park Elementary. I live only.2 miles away from the house I grew up in!  I sponsor both the French club and the tabletop gaming club.  To contact me, either message me through my webpage (madameodell.com), me at or call the main office and ask for me or my extension - A little about myself…

Students will study French culture, vocabulary, and grammar during the school year. There are French 1 and French 2 course outlines for you to take home and they are also available on my webpage: The ultimate goal is for students to be able to use French in 3 different modes to interact with each unit of study. The three modes are: –Interpretive –Interpersonal –Presentational Curriculum Goals

Encourage your child to study French every day – even if just for 10 minutes – even if they don’t have homework. They all have textbooks that you should see at home frequently because they have homework and will need to study. If you don’t see the text at home, they can access the textbook online at my.hrw.com. Every student should have their own login and password for the online text by the end of this week. Try a free language webpage and/or application like duolingo (my favorite), BBC languages, livemocha.com, busuu, byki, or about.com. Englewood High even has a Rosetta Stone account. The link is: The login is aodell and the password is password. (or just me and I’ll send you the login information.) Ways to help at home

Course Assessment Plan and Grading: o Major assessments are worth 60% (for example, long term in-class and out- of class projects, tests, etc.). o Minor assessments are worth 40%. The 40% will be calculated as follows: 10% Participation (in-class activities); 10% Homework (out-of-class activities); 20% Quizzes (for example: quizzes, short projects, skits, etc.) Report cards go home every nine weeks and progress reports will be sent home halfway through each nine week grading period. Students can expect to have homework at least once a week and a long-term project every nine weeks. Class Information

Students are expected to be responsible for their own makeup work. Makeup work can be found on my webpage: madameodell.com. Students have five days from the day they return from an excused absence to complete the makeup work for full credit, or they will receive a penalty for the missing assignments. Grades are entered on Focus at least once a week – usually more often. I will make every effort to make most assignments downloadable and up loadable, whenever possible. Sign up for class reminders at remind.com. The class login information is on madameodell.com Safety nets: Students can retake quizzes and tests as long as they can demonstrate that they now know the material. Class Information

– Be responsible. I expect you to come to class every day ready and eager to learn and participate. –Be prepared. –Be respectful. –Follow directions. –Be punctual. – Do your own work. Students caught cheating will receive a zero and a phone call or home. Both the student who shares his/her work for an independent assignment AND the person who copies it will suffer the same consequences. I expect students to do their own work Class Rules
