7 P 1 & 2 Course Content and Expectations Independent Reading Why Reading Workshop? Accelerated Reader encouraged students to read a lot of books at their level and choose from a variety of works. Reading Workshop includes those ideas but it adds conferencing, modeling and the teaching of reading strategies. There are three ‘parts’ to Reading Workshop: Mini-lessons Activity Conferencing Period Reflection

8 Concepts and skills will be taught and reinforced through various avenues including: mini-lessons direct instruction Writing Workshop Grammar

9 Journals Writing Workshop Variety of assignments: responses to literature quick-write activities special assignments research papers Writing

10 3 inch binder (used for all subjects) 1 section in binder designated for English Composition book/Journal Pencils Dividers Materials Needed English

11 Homework will be given every night. Use of the student planner is required. Typically it will include an English assignment as well as a reading assignment. Independent reading/Reading Workshop will be ongoing. Homework is due on the due date. Assignments will be accepted one day late for half credit. Students are encouraged to check teacher webpage Homework

12 Grades are calculated using a total points system. Each assignment or assessment given is worth a certain number of points. Homework assignments are typically worth 5-15 points, quizzes are worth around 40-50 points, and tests and/or projects can be worth up to 100 points. Final grades are determined by the total number of points earned, divided by the total number of points offered. Grading
