Accommodation & Hospitality Services The University owes a special duty of care to: Wheelchair Users Those with hearing, sight and mobility impairment Pregnant women and nursing mothers Young people and children Special consideration is also required for those who do not have English as their first language in terms of communicating the emergency evacuation procedures Specific risks to these groups should be identified and additional control measures implemented where relevant Please be aware of these people in your buildings and reports any concerns you may have to your manager. Special Duty of Care

Accommodation & Hospitality Services Did you also know The University has a business continuity plan…which is a necessary and important management process that helps keep an organisation going even in the most trying of times. It covers: SECURITY AND EMERGENCIES,FIRE/BOMB THREAT, LETTER BOMBS AND SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES, ESTATES AND EMERGENCIES, GAS LEAKS, FLOODING ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS/CLOSURE OF UNIVERSITY amongst others.

Accommodation & Hospitality Services What kind of people do we have a special duty of care for? What should you do in an evacuation scenario? What should you do differently in an invacuation? What are the three sides to the triangle of fire? Having evacuated the workplace after hearing the fire alarm, what immediate action should an employee normally take? A Check for any windows left open. B Report to the assembly point. C Contact the fire brigade. D Alert the occupants of nearby buildings. A fire exit sign usually shows a picture of a: A running person. B pointing finger. C fire extinguisher. D fire engine. Questions Do you have any questions?

How many of you know the evacuation procedures for your buildings? What are they? How many did not know? What’s an ‘invacuation’ and when would we carry one of those out and why? How will I know and what should I do? Who should be made aware of the emergency evacuation procedures and when? What are the main causes of evacuations? What do we/can we do to reduce these? Is there a difference in procedure for a bomb alert and a fire? If so, what is it? Further Discussion Points Where are your fire assembly points? Where is this information?
