Unit 3: Learning Styles Welcome! Please feel free to chat with each other until seminar starts. I will be back with you at the top of the hour.

Please feel free to share anything new, exciting, different that has been going on in your life… keep us in the loop!

Unit 3 objectives: 1) Develop a stronger understanding of your learning style 2) Take the LASSI and learn about your online learning and study habits (more about this in a moment)

Student Success Coaching is available to students who need some guidance in areas such as: Time Management Stress management Life Balance Issues: family/personal distractions or challenges Academic readiness/coping abilities Career preparedness/focus If this sounds like something you might benefit from please contact me or your academic advisor

How would you define a person’s learning style (be specific here…not the three types, but WHAT IS a learning style?)

What are the three learning styles discussed in Unit 3?

SEE IT - HEAR IT - DO IT Also known as Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (tactile or hands-on)

Need to see it to believe it When in the traditional classroom, watch the teacher’s body language and typically sit in the front of the room Online, enjoy extra visual stimulation and information such as PowerPoints Download or print handouts to see information Like to see things in front of them when they are learning Other attributes you can identify??

Use highlighter Take detailed notes, consider re-writing Study in a quiet place Try to visualize information in order to draw out connections Others?

Need to hear it to believe it When in the traditional classrooms learn best through lectures and discussions Online, enjoy websites with audio capabilities and textbooks that come with audio options Others?

Read texts aloud or ask someone to read to you Consider taping material onto a tape recorder Discuss ideas with others Create rhymes to help remember the information What do you do?

Need to do it to believe it In a traditional classroom may have trouble listening or paying attention Online, enjoy activities that enhance what they are reading or provide practice Desire to use a hands-on approach whenever possible Others?

Take frequent breaks Move around when studying Use a highlighter (the movement of the pen over the words is what helps) Study in a fun “busy” area What do you do?

Most of us use all of the learning styles. Most of us have a preferred style. Different tasks require different styles of learning. When we are learning from others, the natural tendency is that they teach in THEIR most comfortable learning style (important to keep in mind when YOU are teaching something new to someone)

Considering the learning styles information, how will this information help you cater your online learning to suit your personal needs?

Things to know… 1) LASSI stands for Learning And Study Strategies Inventory 2) The LASSI is an assessment that will help you understand your learning style and study skills 3) It is a straightforward assessment that is easy to understand and follow 4) You will learn about things you are doing well, as well as those that need a little work 5) It will take you about minutes to complete

1) Click on the LASSI link under the Unit 3 heading 2) You’ll need the following information to get started (this is also listed in the directions in the classroom): School Number: User Name: kaplan Password: lassi 3) IMPORTANT: Make sure you SAVE or PRINT OUT the results so you can use them for the Unit 3 assignment

These are also called modules 1. Anxiety 2. Attitude 3. Concentration 4. Information Processing 5. Motivation 6. Strategies to improve attitudes to online learning 7. Study Aids 8. Selecting Main Ideas 9. Self testing 10. Test Strategies 11. Time Management

Quick results Show you areas you are doing well, as well as those that need a little more work Easy to apply the information to daily life Remember: Take the time to do the survey so your results are more authentic. I don’t see your results, so if you hurry and don’t take the assessment, the only person this is impacting is YOU! Do your best!

Template found under the Unit 3 Assignment area You’ll have the opportunity to list your modules/categories and reflect on your findings. Please write out the names of the modules/categories in section A. Don’t just list your score. The minimum requirement for the reflection is 2 paragraphs, each paragraph containing at least 5 sentences. Turn your paper in by Tuesday at 11:59 PM EST

Jayden liked school but always got in trouble for getting up and moving around in his high school class. He would tap his pencil on the desk when he was reading, and when doing his assignments at home he liked to walk around. He didn’t like to follow instructions on assignments but preferred to just get started and do the work. This caused some problems for him because he sometimes missed important parts of the assignments. Jayden is now taking online classes. **Case Study is listed under Seminar area in Unit 3**

What is Jayden’s preferred learning style? How can he use it to his advantage? What suggestions can you give Jayden to help him find success in online studies?

Readings Discussion posts--come into Discussions early! Post on 3 different dates, initial post by Saturday Unit 3 assignment (LASSI reflection)
