What are Learning Styles?

Learning Styles are: Ways of handling new information by making use of our habitual or preferred methods. Procedures or Techniques to help grip new knowledge.

Learning Styles: are different for each person. There is no aim to label individuals as belonging to one specific type of style.

Visual Learner: rarely speaks in class. is verbal in his language (Spanish). follows the teacher with his eyes. reads lips and needs to see what the teacher is saying. is very neat and organized. highlights information. works quickly and finishes early. responds better to teacher’s written comments than to verbal messages.

relates to words such as: see, look, observe and read. reads for pleasure or information. enjoys watching TV documentaries for visual information prefers to read than to listen. feels frustrated when the teacher gives oral instructions. takes extensive notes during lectures. makes lists regularly of daily goals or activities. Visual Learner:

Auditory Learner:  is always whispering or talking.  likes narratives, jokes and stories  can repeat information given in a verbal way with accuracy.  uses rhythm and sound as memory aids.  is an excellent leader because he listens to people.  performs better in class than on tests. is usually the class clown. reads only for main ideas.

Auditory Learner: relates to words such as hear, listen, sound and ring. masters information by listening, repeating or discussing. likes to socialize and shares ideas. prefers to go over instructions or handouts orally. answers in class, gives examples. would rather listen to lectures than read an article. remembers songs and lyrics.

Tactil Learner: needs concrete experiences to process new information. has difficulty learning abstract symbols or following cause and effect sequences. has a very short concentration span. 11 Tactil Learner: needs to see and hear and physically do things in class. tends to be very clumsy with teachers and classmates. needs to move and get physical release of tension through movement. 12  needs to follow an observe-reflect- do sequence to absorb new information.  does things with his hands, writes things.  are good at sports and physical tasks.  responds to feelings more than words either written or spoken.  are energized by their inner selves. Kinesthetic Learner:

 takes information apart, analysis it and puts it back together.  moves, cannot stay still for long periods of time.  learns best with quiet periods followed by active ones. Kinesthetic Learner:

Visual/verbal aids: handouts, outlines or summaries, written definitions of new terms, written and oral explanations of charts, graphs and diagrams. Follow-up readings for any class.

TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE VISUAL LEARNER TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE AUDITORY LEARNER Tactile Learner: TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE TACTILE LEARNER STRATEGIES TO HELP THE AUDITORY LEARNER I  Information should be presented through lectures, class discussions, small group activities, films and tapes.  Give oral instructions for tasks, tests and assignments.  Give oral explanations for charts, tasks, diagrams, etc.

Brainstorm ideas before a reading or writing assignments. Give opportunities to ask questions and share ideas during class. Give oral summaries of main points in lectures or readings. Permit oral reports by students. 17 TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE VISUAL LEARNER TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE AUDITORY LEARNER Tactile Learner: TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE TACTILE LEARNER STRATEGIES TO HELP THE TACTILE LEARNER  Things should be presented in a global way, through concrete experiences.  Take him on field trips.  Permit periods of breaks to stretch and move around.  Prepare short activities and long activities should be broken up into time breaks.

TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE VISUAL LEARNER TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE AUDITORY LEARNER Tactile Learner: TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE TACTILE LEARNER STRATEGIES TO HELP THE KINESTHETIC LEARNER  He needs the teacher’s physical presence near him in order to stay focused.  He will not respond appropriately if the teacher comes too close or singles him out in class.  You should approach him through a mixture ofaffection and persuasion.

TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE VISUAL LEARNER TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE AUDITORY LEARNER Tactile Learner: TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP THE TACTILE LEARNER Useful advice to help students become independent learners:

Visual Learner: Take rough notes in class and then copy them neatly at home Keep one notebook per subject and divide each one into sections Use highlighters and underline important information Use graphic organizers to chart information

Visual Learner: When the teacher asks you to rememebr something, close your eyes and visualize it When trying to visualize information, add colors and light in your mind’s eye to help remember better

Auditory Learner: Whenever possible, study with a friend. If your teacher allows, tape your lessons and play the tape at home to review. Take good notes and at home, read them out loud once and then read them silently but trying to to hear your teacher’s voice.

Auditory Learner: Set important information to music and sing them to yourself. Read out loud whenever possible. When studying at home, try to be away from noisy places and ask not to be interrupted.

Tactile Learner: Try to make a picture of any important information or build a model of it to help you remember it. Study for 15 minutes then take a 5-minute break. Play music while you study.

Tactile Learner: When studying new information, write it up in the air with your finger, say what you are writing out loud, and listen to yourself saying it. Try to feel comfortable when studying. Do it with lots of light, sitting in a comfortable chair and try to do so on a spacious table or desk. Also wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Kinesthetic Learner: When you want to memorize something set it to rhythm and say it out loud. Whenever you study try to do so in a comfortable chair. Take breaks while studying. Study for 20 minutes and then stand up and move. Whenever possible, study with a friend.

Kinesthetic Learner: If you need to move in class, try to ask your teacher to let you stand up. Carry a small bag of sand in your hand and squeeze it when possible. Play music while you study. Cover the surface on which you study with a piece of cloth in a color you like and touch it. Walk while you read. This will help you remember better.
