Discussion What do you already know about learning styles? What is your learning style and how does knowing it help you in school? What do you want to know about learning styles/your learning style?

Visual Learners Relate best to information that is written (ie. notes, diagrams and pictures) Study tips: Always take notes, even if you have been given printed materials. Don’t just listen, you need to look at the study materials and directions. Use or make your own charts, maps, notes and flashcards. Practice visualizing or picturing words and concepts in your head. Write everything down for frequent and quick visual reference.

Tend to listen to lectures, then take notes afterward or rely on printed notes. May find it helpful to read written information aloud. Study tips: Read your assignments and study materials aloud Even if you feel a little silly at first—record yourself reading your notes Sit at the front of the classroom where you can hear well.

Review, Review, Review!

15 Note Taking Skills RECORD: Take notes in class by identifying the main points, write down examples or math problems. Heading: Date, Class/subject , Chapter #, Page #’s, etc.

16 Note Taking Skills REDUCE: After the class, summarize what you have learned using key words or phrases. Write down questions that you may have for the teacher. Don’t worry about writing every word your teacher says. Summarize!

Review from your memory what you have learned. Create your own examples or memorization techniques.

How is this relevant to what you have learned already? Make connections that jog your memory!

Go over the notes you took before reading new material. Study with friends (if that complements your learning style) before every test (NOT 15 minutes before!)

Where Should I Do My Homework? A quiet place. Away from the TV and telephone. A place with a comfortable chair and desk.

How Will I Remember What Homework I Have? Get a homework notebook/planner. Write your assignments in a planner. Check with the teacher ahead of time if you have questions about an assignment.

What if I don’t understand my homework? Review your homework assignments before leaving school. Ask your teacher if you have questions. Attend tutoring. Use online resources (ex: Khan Academy, Tutor.com)

Be sure to develop a system for making sure your homework is turned in! (ie: Put your homework in your binder , put your binder in your backpack, then put your backpack by the front door, etc.)

What does studying mean to you? How is studying different from completing homework? When should you study? For how long should you study? How can you tell the impact of studying on your academic performance? What are the challenges getting in the way of you studying?
