Welcome Parents! 6 th & 7 th grade Reading & English Mrs. Glass IT’S JUNIOR HIGH! This equates to more organization, more responsibility, and more accountability!!!!!!!

Middle School Shift Shift in responsibility & workload – Organization – Studying – Turning in assignments – Working with others – Staying on task and “with-it” during lessons – Responsible for scheduling make-up test & collecting missed work when absent

SCHOOL WIDE PBIS PROGRAM 1.Warning 2.Character Traits Assignment 3.Detention

A day in the life of your child may look similar to this: 1.Planner/Agenda (check website) 2.DOL ( Daily Language Practice) 3.SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) 4.WPR (Weekly Reading Practice) 5.Reading 6. English

Planner Every day your child is responsible for writing down what assignments they have and what assignments are due. Every day your child is responsible for writing down what assignments they have and what assignments are due.

Student Self-Responsibility Checks If a student does not have a completed assignment, the student will have to complete a Self-Responsibility Check form. I will keep and file the white copy and the student will keep the carbon yellow copy. Each assignment not complete will calculated into a homework grade at the end of each nine weeks.

What is DOL? Daily Oral Language or Proofreading Learning editor’s marks Fixing grammatical in sentences Incorporating grammar studies along with reading comprehension & strategies

What are Reading Logs & the SSR Project ? SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) Each nine weeks students will have to read a novel within the 6 th grade lexile level. Students will be required to journal (different from topic journaling) to write down thoughts, questions, and what they’ve noticed during reading as part of each entry. Check my website for specific SSR information.

Students will also complete a Reading Log report. Participation and on-task work is crucial. I will deduct 5 points from the SSR project participation grade each time a student is not reading during SSR or does not have their book.

Writing Essays (various genres) Journals Written responses Poetry ***All graded writing will be done in CLASS!!

Reading We will read several fictional novels along with reading various non-fiction pieces of literature which will correlate with what we are reading. At the end of this week we will begin our novel Hatchet. It is beneficial for your child to have their own copy to highlight, underline, and annotate in.

Reading Students will participate in a various ways of reading each week such as whole class, partner reading, group reading, independent reading, and literature circles. At the beginning of each novel, students will be given vocabulary words and questions for each chapter. Assignments will be made for completing vocabulary sentences applying grammar skills covered within the week and completing questions. This will serve as a study guide for the vocabulary and comprehension test.

Weekly Reading Practice (WRP) Each week students will be given a complex text passage varying in genre and skill. Each passage and questions are aligned to the Common Core State Standards. This will be a combination of school and homework. WRP will given on Mondays and due each Wednesday. DRP will be reviewed each Friday.

Absence If your child is absent, it is his/her responsibility to check the “While You Were Out” notebook and bin for missed assignments. If notes were taken, students must obtain the notes from a peer. If a test was missed, it is the student’s responsibility to schedule a make-up day with me.
