Science Station Comparing Matter through its Physical Properties

Comparing Matter Welcome! Today we will review what we already know about matter and begin comparing different types of matter by its properties.

Review Matter is anything that takes up __________.

Review Matter is anything that takes up __space___.

Review Matter is anything that takes up __space___. The 3 states of matter are ________, _________, and _________.

Review Matter is anything that takes up __space___. The 3 states of matter are __solids__, __liquids__, and __gases__.

Review __________ of matter explain and define the characteristics of matter.

Review _Properties_ of matter explain and define the characteristics of matter.

Which Matter is Being Explained? A _________ will always stay the same weight, can not take a different shape, and the volume (amount of space it takes up) of it will always stay the same.

Which Matter is Being Explained? A __solid__ will always stay the same weight, can not take a different shape, and the volume (amount of space it takes up) will always stay the same.

Which Matter is Being Explained? A __solid__ will always stay the same weight, can not take a different shape, and the volume (amount of space it takes up) will always stay the same. A ________ will always stay the same weight, changes shape to whatever container holds it, and its volume always stays the same.

Which Matter is Being Explained? A __solid__ will always stay the same weight, can not take a different shape, and the volume (amount of space it takes up) will always stay the same. A __liquid__ will always stay the same weight, changes shape to whatever container holds it, and its volume always stays the same.

Which Matter is Being Explained? A ________ can change shape, creates pressure when it is compressed, and its volume changes as it changes.

Which Matter is Being Explained? A __gas__ can change shape, creates pressure when it is compressed, and its volume changes as it changes.

Review Can matter change when its temperatures change? Yes or No

Review Can matter change when its temperatures change? Yes or No

Review Can matter change when its temperatures change? Yes or No What would happen to ice (a solid) when it is heated up?

Review Can matter change when its temperatures change? Yes or No What would happen to ice (a solid) when it is heated up? Yes! It will turn to water (a liquid)

Review Can matter change when its temperatures change? Yes or No What would happen to ice (a solid) when it is heated up? Yes! It will turn to water (a liquid). What will then happen to the water if it continues to be heated?

Review Can matter change when its temperatures change? Yes or No What would happen to ice (a solid) when it is heated up? Yes! It will turn to water (a liquid) What will then happen to the water if it continues to be heated? Yes! It will seem to disappear as it turns into a gas.

Matter You already know that solids, liquids, and gases are defined and described by its properties. The properties of matter we have discussed so far are:

Matter Mass (the matter’s weight, and whether or not it can change) Volume (how much space the matter takes up, and whether or not it can change.) Shape (what shape the matter takes, and whether or not it can change)

Matter These are only a few properties of matter. Today we will begin discussing other properties of matter, including: Strength Hardness Ability to conduct electricity Ability to conduct heat Flexibility Ability to be attracted by magnets

Matter Let’s investigate different solids, liquids, and gases to decide if they have these properties.
