Matter Why does it matter?

What is matter? Anything that has mass (weight) and takes up space Mass (how much matter something has) Volume (how much space it takes up)

Is air matter? Does it have volume (take up space)? Does it have mass (weight)? Let’s find out!

States of matter Solid Liquid Gas Plasma

Solids Atoms or molecules are packed tightly together Do not move, but atoms vibrate Have a stable, definite shape, and a definite volume Require force to change their shape (breaking) When they melt, they become a liquid

Liquids Atoms or molecules move freely They take the shape of their container Have a definite volume When they freeze, they become a solid When they are heated beyond their boiling point, they become gas

Gases Have no definite shape or volume Move freely They will take the shape of their container and will expand to fill the container When gases are cooled to lower than their boiling point, they become liquids

Plasma Have no definite shape or volume Electrically conductive, produce magnetic fields and electric currents, and respond strongly to electromagnetic forces Fire, lightning, Electric sparks, Fluorescent lights, neon lights, plasma televisions, and the Sun Created by a huge voltage difference between 2 points or extremely high temperatures Plasma Video
