1 Physical Properties

2 Learning Scale 4 - Design an experiment to determine the identity of an unknown using its physical properties. 3 - Classify and compare substances based on their physical properties. Calculate and describe the densities of various materials. 2 – Describe some of the physical properties 1 – Identify some of the physical properties

3 A physical property is a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter.

4 Size Dependent vs. Size Independent
Size dependent means that the physical property changes with the amount of matter. Size independent means that the physical property does not change due to the amount.

5 Think Pair Share What is the difference between size dependent and size independent properties?

6 Think Pair Share Which type of property would I use to identify an unknown substance? Why?

7 Size Dependent Properties
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Mass is measured in grams, kilograms, etc. You find the mass using a scale or triple beam balance.

8 Think Pair Share What is the difference between mass and weight? If you were to go to the moon, explain whether mass or weight would change.

9 Volume is the amount of space something takes up.
Volume is measured in liters, milliliters, etc. Measured with a graduated cylinder.

10 Differentiate between mass and volume.
Think Pair Share Differentiate between mass and volume.

11 Size Independent Properties
Melting Point – temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid. Boiling Point – temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas. Conductivity – the ability to carry heat or electricity.

12 Think Pair Share If you change the amount of water in the pan, do you change the boiling point? Explain. If I have a 3 cm block of copper or a 3 m block of copper, does the conductivity change? Explain.

13 Density – mass per volume
Solubility – ability of one substance to dissolve in another. Solute = one that dissolves Solvent = one that makes it dissolve

14 Think Pair Share If an item has less density than water, what happens when it is placed in the water? What is the solute and solvent in Kool-aide?
