PRESENTATION ON PEER PRESSURE Presented by Mr. Nima Tshering Prepared by Mr. Tashi Namgyel TN2012

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU HAVE HAD TO DO SOMETHING YOU DID NOT WANT TO BECAUSE OF YOUR FRIENDS?????? TN2012

DID YOU SMOKE EVEN IF YOU DIDN’T WANT TO BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT YOUR FRIENDS WILL NOT LIKE YOU ANYMORE IF YOU DIDN’T??? TN2012

TN2012

Who is a PEER? A peer is a person who is of the same age as you and shares similar interests, likes and hobbies. He may or may not be your friend. TN2012

What is PEER PRESSURE? When your peer or peer group influences /encourages you to do things you may not want to do. They may (often) threaten you that they will not be friends with you if you do not listen to them. They may also say that you are not COOL if you do not do what they want you to. TN2012

PEER PRESSURE Peer pressure can be both negative and positive. For example, if your peer group is asking you to stop abusing substance, bunking classes, or being naughty the pressure is POSITIVE but on the other hand, if your peer is influencing /forcing you to do drugs, drink, bunk etc then it is NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE. TN2012

IMPACTS OF NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE: Substance abuse and related complexities (Addictions). Irregularity in school and low performance. Antisocial behaviours (Vandalisms and crime) Bullying and Ragging. Corrosion of family bonds. Low social status (Loss of confidence and trust) Suicides. TN2012

IMPACTS OF POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE: Adoption of good habits and giving up of bad habits. Character development. Improvement in attendance and performance. Improvement in self confidence and independence. Improved social relationships. Positive decision making. TN2012

SO WHAT DO WE DO AND HOW DO WE DO IT? TN2012

WAYS TO RESIST PEER PRESSURE: Say what you think and feel – OWN UP YOUR FEELINGS. REVERSE THE PRESSURE AVOID SUCH PEER GROUPS BECAUSE YOUR LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FRIENDSHIP. LEARN TO SAY “NO” – THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF SAYING NO. JUST WALK OUT OF THE SITUATION AND PRETEND YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THEM. STICK TO YOUR DECISION. BE ASSERTIVE – KNOW YOUR SELF BETTER. MOST IMPORTANTLY : USE LIFE SKILLS TN2012

LET US STOP NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE TN2012

SITUATION ANALYSIS USING LIFE SKILLS: FOR BOYS: Dorji, Karma and Thukten are in the same peer group. Dorji and Thukten have planned to smoke marijuna, and they want Karma to join them. Karma doesn’t want to but he is worried that Dorji and Thukten will get angry and avoid him in future. What Life Skills must Karma use to make the right decision???? TN2012

SITUATION ANALYSIS USING LIFE SKILLS: FOR GIRLS: Wangmo and Zangmo are good friends. They are close and listen to each other most of the time. Drakpa is also close to Zangmo. He wants Zangmo to persuade Wangmo to accept him as her boyfriend. Zangmo pressurizes Wangmo and tells her that she will be angry if she doesn’t listen to her. What LIFE SKILLS should Wangmo use to make the right decision? TN2012

LET US PLEDGE THAT: WE WILL NOT FALL VICTIMS TO PEER PRESSURE….NEVER….NEVER…EVER!!!! TN2012

LET US PLEDGE THAT: WE WILL NOT EXERT NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE ON ANY OF OUR FRIENDS: TN2012

THANK YOU ALL!!! TN2012
