2 LESSON OBJECTIVES Identify the dangers of substance abuse (drugs, alcohol, tobacco) Develop strategies for dealing with negative peer pressure in order to make safe, healthy choices. Use effective communication skills to deal with peer pressure

3 QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT What does it mean to be healthy? What are some things we should not do, things that would hurt the way we think and act? What might happen to someone who smokes?smokes What might happen to someone who drinks beer or other alcoholic drinks?alcoholic Do you know of any other drugs that might keep us from being healthy and taking care of ourselves?

6 VIDEO: THE BOY WHO WAS SWALLOWED BY THE DRUG MONSTER This is a true story of a boy who was hurt by using drugs. The movie calls the bad drugs the boy used the drug monster. Let’s watch and then we’ll talk about how the boy could have done things another way.

7 AFTER THE VIDEO Why did Vince try smoking drugs in the first place? What bad things happened to Vince that would not have happened if he had not tried drugs? How did the drugs change Vince?

8 PEER PRESSURE Pressure is the feeling that you are being pushed toward making a certain choice—good or bad. A peer is someone in your own age group. Peer pressure is—you guessed it—the feeling that someone your own age is pushing you toward making a certain choice, good or bad.

9 HOW TO DEAL WITH PEER PRESSURE Say no assertively Suggest something else to do Stand up for others Walk away from the situation Find something else to do with other friends

10 HOW TO SAY NO Often it is not what we say but how we choose to say it that tells people what we really mean! Let’s practice…
