Presentation transcript:

Everything in the world is made of matter. Matter is anything that takes up space (V) and has mass (M). There are 3 states of matter. Really there are 5: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and superfluid. Matter What is matter? What are the three states of matter?

Measurement The basic unit for length is the meter (m). The metric system is the international system of measurement. It is used in most countries and in the scientific community. What is the international system of measurement? What is the basic unit for length?

Mass vs. Weight Weight is the amount of gravitational pull on an object. Weight is measured with a scale. Gravitational pull is dependent on: 1.The size of the planet the object is on (larger-more gravitational pull) 2.Where the object is in relation to the center of gravity of the planet (further away – less gravitational pull) What is weight? What tool do you use to measure weight? What two things effect gravitational pull?

Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. Mass is measured with a balance. The standard unit of measurement for mass is kilograms. Mass is always the same regardless of location. What is mass? What tool is used to measure mass? What is the basic unit for mass? How is mass different than weight?

Volume Volume is the measure of the amount of space an object takes up. The basic SI unit of volume is the liter. You can compute the volume of a rectangular prism using the formula V = l x w x h. 1 cm 3 = 1mL You can also compute the volume of an object by placing the object in a graduated cylinder filled with water. This is called water displacement. What is volume? What is the basic SI unit for volume? What is the formula for volume? What is 1 cm 3 equal to? Besides the formula, how else can you find volume?

Density Density is the measure of the amount of mass (M) in a given volume (V). The formula for density is d = m. v The density of water is 1.0 gm/cm 3. Any density greater than 1.0 will sink, any density less than 1.0 will float. What is density? What is the formula for density? How can you determine if an object will sink or float in water?

Temperature Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is. It can also be called the measure of the amount of movement of the particles within the object. The three basic scales of temperature are Celsius (C), Fahrenheit (F), and Kelvin (K). The Systems International (SI) unit for measuring temperature is the Kelvin. Zero being the point of no particle movement. What is temperature? What are the three basic scales of temperature? What is the basic SI unit for temperature?
