1 Measuring Notes キThe units used for mass are grams (g).
キ Mass is a measure of the amount of matter (atoms/particles) in an object. キThe units used for mass are grams (g). キThe instrument we use to measure mass is called a triple beam balance or scale.

2 A Triple Beam Balance

3 キ The weight of an object is different from its mass because weight also measures the gravitational force on an object. That’s why a person on the moon may weigh 2 lbs., but on the earth they are actually 200 lbs!

4 VOLUME キVolume is the amount of space an object takes up.
キThe units used to measure volume are liters (l) or cm3. キThe instrument we use to measure volume is called a graduated cylinder.

5 If we are measuring the volume of a cube we use the formula:
Length X Width X Height and we would use a Ruler.

6 When measuring irregular objects we use water displacement.

7 Density Notes Density is the amount of matter in a given space.
The formula for density is: Density = ____Mass_____ or D = M Volume V So in order to find the density of an object, we must first find its mass and volume.

8 The units for density are g/mL or g/cm3.
This is because when we divide the mass and volume of an object we must also divide the units. Example: 20 g = 2 g/ml _g_ 10ml ml

9 The density of water is 1 g/mL
If the density is greater than 1 then it sinks. If the density is less than 1 then it floats.
