EU funding for sustainable energy Use of EGNOS for Safety-of-Life Applications: Rail & Maritime

Activity: Exploiting the full potential Area: Safety-of-Life applications Description of topic Galileo (b)

Past projects proved EGNOS benefits for Rail & Maritime need to be further developed Rail & Maritime remain two important user communities SoL regulated applications have long lead times (e.g. certification)

This project is addressing EGNOS SoL use and preparation to Galileo Main objectives are: To advance on past work and tackle roadblocks, propose solutions Finalize a roadmap for SoL service introduction Have real life demo proving concepts Other objectives: Analyse cost and benefits of EGNOS/Galileo Preliminary business cases from public/private perspective

FAQ 1/3 Where do you see the R&D value of this project ? Tackling the unresolved issues highlighted in past projects by propose innovative technical solutions Is it a continuation of past projects, like GRAIL/MARUSE (i.e. same concept) ? Questions/issues raised by previous research should be reviewed and solutions provided. New approaches are welcome, if proved to be more effective (e.g., to tackle open issues along the whole value chain, including regulatory ones) Do you expect a well-written report ? Yes but also real-life demos as proof of concepts/solutions proposed Project specifications Duration: up to 24 months Collaborative project (youll have to match 50% of the total budget)

FAQ 2/3 I run past FP Rail and/or Maritime related project, do I have an advantage here ? Selection will be strictly based on the merits of the proposal and capability of the consortium, independently of past participation on similar research Do you focus more on rail or maritime ? The two are relevant. Most innovative/impactful proposal will win Who would be the ideal consortiums members ? Public and private organization that can tackle all the open issues along the entire chain of operations

FAQ 3/3 Is there any geographical focus ? Pan-European trials (i.e., cross-border) will be most welcome Is it a continuation of past projects, like GRAIL/MARUSE (i.e. can I repackage past work :-) ? We do not want to duplicate/replicate past work, though we shall build on the knowledge created by past investments Do I need a business plan in my proposal? Yes,we do not intend to finance proposals with no perspectives I didnt quite get what do you expect out of spending this money List of SoL Rail or Maritime applications that can be realistically pursued (having tested feasibility) and a program plan on how to get them adopted

Final remarks Coordination with other projects: EC/GSA encourages collaboration among FP7 projects Be ready to participate in meetings and organise workshops Use all the new media available to maximize dissemination Further information and questions: cordis.europa.eu
