Analyze the Prompt Define family in different cultures and explain how families bring people together or keep them apart.

Topic Sentence The notion of family connects people biologically, morally, and philosophically, but these same connections can keep people apart.

Explanation of the Key Idea Define key words in the prompt What is family and how is it different in different cultures? In some cultures, family refers only to the people you are directly related to whereas in other cultures it can extend to a larger group that you are connected to based on your ideas and values.

Three Supports One paragraph of analysis requires three supports with examples. Supports might include Similar biology Similar/different morality (values) Similar/different philosophy (beliefs)

First Support One way that people are connected within their family is through biology. Provide two or three sentences that explain how this practice works; include a specific example from the text. In some cultures, your family is your nuclear family, or those people you are directly related to by blood, such as your parents and siblings. In other cultures, family refers to your extended kin, or your grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins many times over.

Provide a Specific Example For instance, in American Ways, the author explains that people from the United States tend to stay connected only to their nuclear family. Use transitions!

Analyze the Example In the case of both nuclear and extended families, people are connected by their genetic makeup, which brings them together.

Second Support Choose something other than biology, e.g., values or beliefs. Provide two or three sentences explaining this idea Provide one example from text Analyze that example

Third Support Choose a third idea to show how family can bring people together or keep them apart. Provide two or three sentences explaining this idea Provide one example from text Analyze that example

Concluding Sentence No new ideas Wrap up the paragraph Relate to the opening sentence! The social construct of family has the ability to bring people or keep them apart based on biology, morality, and philosophy.
