What is a Family ‘The basic unit of society.’

2 Starter Write one sentence to describe what you think a family is.

3 Learning Outcomes All will be able to describe various types of family unit Most will be able to discuss the functions of a family and why they are important Some will be able to list possible advantages and disadvantages of being a child within these families

4 Nuclear Family Consists of parents and children who live together in a home away from the rest of the family. Students to complete a spider diagram while you go through on the board

5 Extended Family Similar to nuclear family though ‘extended’, made bigger by the addition of grandparents, aunts, uncles or cousins. They all live in the same house or close to each other.

6 Step Family or Re-Constituted
The joining of two families. It is formed when a couple, at least one of whom has a child or children, marry or live together. This new relationship may result in more children (step-brothers or step-sisters).

7 Single Parent Family One parent brings up children on their own.
25% of children are brought up in single parent families.

8 Shared Care Family The divorce or separation of parents may mean that children live in two households, spending time with both parents. Equal responsibility is given to both parents.

9 Adoptive Family Adoption provides a permanent home for a child whose parents are unable to do so.

10 Foster Family May be long or short term while birth parents are unable to look after children or while an adoptive family is found.

11 Residential Care Home Small group of children are looked after by carers in a family-type structure.

12 Same Sex Family Parents are both of the same sex. May be two men or two women.

13 Tasks & Questions Design a chart to list two advantages and two disadvantages of each type of family Suggest two events that could result in a child being brought up by one parent What effect may it have on the children of two families who join together and form a step family? Give four important facts about the people who would like to foster children

14 Question What age do you think is ‘perfect’ to have a baby? Discuss

15 Plenary Which type of family do you live with – explain to the person next to you
