Friday, February 1st AGENDA Wrap up Locke Vs. Montesquieu Answer Essential Question 1 Review Economic systems and philosophies growing out of Industrial Revolution Capitalism & Marxism Organization Time Objective: Define Democracy and explain how Locke’s idea of natural rights and Montesquieu’s idea of separation of powers are both important in a functioning democratic government. (GOV)

Natural rights All persons have these rights just because they are human beings Everyone is born with these rights and they should not be taken away without a person's agreement.

Purpose Main purpose of government: *To protect the people’s natural rights *Kings should not have absolute power, that is, w/o limits. *Cannot deprive people of their natural rights.

Social Compact People should agree with one another to give up some of their freedoms in exchange for protection and security. Agreement is called a social compact or social contract. An agreement people make among themselves to create a government to rule them and protect their rights. They consent to obey the laws created by the government.

Montesquieu French Political Philosopher Absolute Monarchy Divine Rights of Kings Studied all the Constitutions in the world, searching for the “Natural Laws” beneath government

The Separation of Powers France – King with 100% of power – could be tyrant England – Parliament ran the Government, King figurehead

The Three Branches The best way to avoid tyranny is to spread power among 3 branches

Checks & Balances Balance of Power

The Main Purpose of Government Protect the Rights of the Minority
