2 Background: Internet Addiction = behavioral addiction Excessive or poorly controlled preocupations,urges or behaviors regarding computer use and internet acces Proposed to be included in the next version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM) –Addictions non-related to substances Worldwide,in countries with a high rate of using the technology / computer acces Rehab centers in : Italy,France, Germany, UK,USA,Korea, China, Taiwan

3 Internet Addiction Generalized Anxiety Depression Obsessive compulsive disorder Schizophrenia Background : An unpleasant state of mind causing nervous behavior A state of low mood and aversion to activity An anxiety disorder characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions Psychotic mental disorders that is affecting individual's thoughts, behaviors, and social functioning.

4 Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) DSM V criterias: Excessive anxiety and worry for activities, events > 3 months Anxiety and worry are associated with one or more symptoms : 1.restlessness 2.feeling on the edge 3.muscle tension Changes in behavior shown by ≥1 of the following : 1.marked avoidance by potentially negative events 2.intensive preparing for possible negative outcomes of events or activities 3.marked procrastination in behavior or decision-making due to worries 4.repeatedly seeking reassurance due to worries

5 Aim of the study: - Identify the levels of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) levels among the survey lot of student from UMF Targu Mures -Identify the levels of internet usage among students from UMF Targu Mures Correlation

6 Subjects and Methods Survey lot of 34 students from General Medicine Descriptive analytical and transversal study Voluntary participation Confidenciality of personal data Inclusion criteria : - students in the 6 th year - >3years of internet usage -daily internet users Demographic data : -21 women, 13 men -average age of 24 years -religious beliefs - relationship status

7 Subjects and Methods Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) -Max Hamilton, items designed to assess the severity of a patient’s anxiety -each item includes a group of symptoms rated on a scale of 0 to 4, with 4 being the most severe Internet Addiction Test (IAT) -survey provided by Dr. Kimberly Young -a reliable and valid measure of addictive use of internet -it consists of 20 items that measures mild, moderate and severe level of internet addictions - Internet addiction = impulse-control disorder -measures the degree to which the Internet affects aspects of one’s daily life (daily routine,sleep pattern, productivity, social life,feelings) Statistical analysis was performed in Excel and GraphPad.

10 Results : 29% Moderate anxiety HARS -worries -decreased attention -lack of concentration for study -muscle tension -shaky voice -sleep pattern changes

11 Results: IAT 32% Moderate internet addiction experiencing occasional problems -urge to use the internet -sleep disturbance -headache -neglecting problems -alimentation problems -dry eyes, headache

12 Results: Graph Pad correlation analysis between HARS and IAT assessed a strong correlation coefficient (r=0,74),with a p value < 0,0001 Statistically considered extremly significant

13 Conclusions: Future assessments ????? Internet Addiction = a risk factor for GAD ? Internet Addiction -students have mild or moderate internet addiction -bigger prevalence among women ›men 7:4 - very often among celibate subjects (91%) Anxiety -the students from UMF Targu Mures are facing mild or moderated anxiety disorder - prevalence among women › men 7:3 -very often among celibate subjects (90%)
