Our Grammar Friend: Quotation Mark By: Emmy Costantino

Definition one of a pair of punctuation marks “ ” is used chiefly to indicate the beginning and the end of a quotation in which the exact phraseology of another or of a text is directly cited (Mirriam- Webster)

Quotation marks come two by two. Use two before, two when you’re through. Enclosed are words said by another, Like, “Clean this messy room!” yelled Mother. (Bruno, p.13)

Quotation Marks Surround a text, or statement made by someone else Often followed or preceded by a *hint* word like, “said” or “yelled” –Use of quotations here to symbolize what the statement would look like, get it? Quotation marks are also in pairs of pairs, one pair at the beginning of the phrase or word and one pair at the end –An exception though is the single quotation mark which signifies a quote within a quote

Other Punctuations Involved… To tie into last class, it is also important to remember the comma. Before using quotation marks remember to include a comma –She said, “Don’t forget your lunch!” And if there should be a punctuation at the end of the quote… –.=, “I forgot my lunch,” she said. –?= remains “Did you forget your lunch?” she said. –!= remains “Don’t forget your lunch!” she said.
