Direct Quotations Quotation marks are used to show someone’s exact words. The children said excitedly, “Let’s ride on the Jungle Cruise!”

3 Caitlyn screamed, “Goofy, this is a blast!”
Quotation Mark Rules Capitalize the first word of the person’s exact words. Place the end punctuation or the comma that ends the quotation inside the quotation marks. Caitlyn screamed, “Goofy, this is a blast!”

4 Mickey said happily, “Come visit Disney World!”
Quotation Mark Rules Use commas to set off words that introduce, interrupt, or follow a direct quotations. Mickey said happily, “Come visit Disney World!”

5 Quotation Mark Rules Do not begin the second part of an interrupted quotation with a capital letter. Set off the interrupting phrase with commas. “Remember,” said Mother, “don’t be late.”

6 Quotation Mark Rules If the interrupted quotation is two complete sentences, use a period and a capital letter. “Please make tortillas,” I begged. “They taste great.”

7 Indirect Quotations Is a quotation that is reworded instead of being quoted directly. It does not need quotation marks. Father said he would sing at the festival.
