ISO liaison organisations such as GS1 can participate actively in the work but dont have any voting right Proposal for a new standard or for modifying an existing standard is addressed by a country or a liaison body Documents progress from working draft to the ultimate status of formal standard. Each step includes a formal ballot by the country members of the technical body

ISO reference is important to GS1 adoption by governmental organisations in some regions and by sectors such as Health care, Defence, Airlines, Industrial goods, Automotive, etc. Interoperability between GS1 and non-GS1 standards Develop synergies with communities beyond GS1s traditional user base

Global Commerce and Technology proliferation imply that The need for global standards addressing Identification, Automatic Data Capture, Communication, Data synchronisation, Visibility, Traceability, etc. will increase dramatically in the future GS1s leadership role will be maintained and enhanced through our involvement with other standard bodies 9
