CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation / European Committee for standardization)
CENELEC (Comité Européen de Normalisation Electrotechnique / European Committee for Electrotechnical standardization)
CEN is the multisectoral organisation and is active in all fields except the electrotechnical and the telecommunications field. CEN's mission is to promote voluntary technical harmonization in Europe in conjunction with worldwide bodies and its partners in Europe.
CENELEC is the organisation responsible for standardization in the eletrotechnical area. CENELEC, together with its members, affiliates and co-operating partners, is developing and achieving a coherent set of voluntary electrotechnical standards as a basis to a Single European Market / European Economic Area without internal frontiers for goods and services inside Europe.
Both CEN and CENELEC have their offices in Brussels. CEN and CENELEC have common regulations for the standardization work (CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations) and as far as possible common policies (e.g. for the acceptance of new members, for copyright and sales of European standards and for the operation of a common scheme for the conformity to European standards).
ETSI The European Telecommunications Standards Institute is a non-profit making organization whose mission is to determine and produce telecommunications standards. It is an open forum that unites 696 members from 50 countries, representing administrations, network operators, manufacturers, service providers, and users. Any European organization proving an interest in promoting European telecommunications standards has the right to represent that interest in ETSI and thus to directly influence the standards making process. ETSI has its premises in Sophia Antipolis/France.
CEN/CENELEC/ETSI have coordination structures for general policy (Joint Presidents Group) and technical liaison (Joint Coordination Group). They have specific cooperation agreements for the IT area.
