Louis Armstrong  Born Aug. 4, 1901 in New Orleans, LA  Died July 6, 1971 in Queens, NY  Father left family shortly after Louis was born.  Mother often left Louis with grandmother  At age 11 sent to juvenile home for shooting a gun in the air at a New Year’s Eve party  Fell in love with music when he received instruction on cornet at New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs
