2 Types of Jazz Ragtime - one of the early musical styles that contributed to the development of jazz. It combined a sixteenth-note-based syncopated melody with the form and feel of a march. The Blues - A highly expressive, predominantly vocal tradition, blues songs expressed the stories and emotions of a persons life and trials. Dixieland - Blues and ragtime came together in the late teens to early 1920s in New Orleans, Louisiana to create a new type of music called Dixieland. Big band - Following the rise of Dixieland jazz in the 1920s was a new style performed by a large ensemble usually consisting of 10 or more players. Bebop - A style of jazz played by a small group of players. The music was characterized by more complex chords progressions and melodies with a stronger emphasis on the rhythm section.

3 Cool Jazz - a more subtle, moody, muted, and restrained style than bebop, and may have been influenced by the harmonies of 20th-century art music composers like Stravinsky and Debussy. Latin Jazz – a style of jazz characterized by Latin dance rhythms combined with jazz melodies and chord progressions. Free Jazz - Experimental, provocative, and challenging style of jazz characterized by a high degree of dissonance Fusion - jazz improvisation and chord progressions with the rhythms of rock.

4 Louis Armstrong One of the most influential instrumentalist and singers in jazz and American music history. Born August 4 th 1901 in New Orleans Armstrong sent to Colored Waifs’ Home at the age of 13 where he learns to play cornet In 1924 Armstrong joins Fletcher Henderson band in New York In 1932 he went to Europe to tour. He remained in Europe for over two years 1935 – Armstrong forms his own band with Joe Glaser as manager. Louis Armstrong dies July 6, 1971of heart failure Inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 he was responsible for innovations that filtered down through popular music to rock and roll.
