Using a USB Flash Drive on a PC:  Insert the Flash Drive into the USB port on your computer/laptop. Allow about 30 seconds for the device to be recognized.  Open My Computer. The USB Flash Drive will appear in the “Devices with Removable Storage” area. It will appear as “Removable Storage (E:),” “Untitled,” or with the USB brand name.  Open the Flash Drive and select the file you want to view/edit.

Using a USB Flash Drive on a PC:  To save a file to the Flash Drive, go to File, Save As. Type a name for the document in the File Name window. Locate My Computer and find the drive for the Flash Drive. Choose this as the location for the file. Click Save.  Never just pull out the USB Flash Drive when you are finished. Rather, left-click on the Remove Hardware icon located in the System Tray (bottom right corner of screen). Left-click on the Safely Remove Mass Storage Device that matched your flash drive. When a message appears saying “it is safe to remove hardware,” you may then remove your Flash Drive.

Using a USB Flash Drive on a Mac:  Insert the Flash Drive into the USB port on your computer/laptop. Allow about 30 seconds for the device to be recognized.  The USB Flash Drive, once recognized, will appear as an icon on your desktop. It will be named either “USB Drive,” “Untitled,” or with the USB brand name.  Open the Flash Drive and select the file you want to view/edit.

Using a USB Flash Drive on a Mac:  To save a file to the Flash Drive, go to File, Save As. Type a name for the document in the Save As window. Locate the Flash Drive in the Devices list in the left panel and choose this as the location for the file. Click Save.  Never just pull out the USB Flash Drive when you are finished. Rather, either click and drag the USB Drive icon to the Eject icon in the Dock (the Trash icon in the dock becomes an Eject icon once you start dragging)  OR right-click on the USB Drive icon and select “Eject.” The icon will no longer be on your desktop after a few seconds. You may then safely remove the Flash Drive from the USB port.
