San José Unified School District Our success story! A total of 402 students participated in last spring’s Smarter Balanced Consortium Summative Assessment (S-BAC) 392 assessments were administered in language arts 398 of the assessments were in mathematics At the district level, 67,000 assessments in grades 3-8 and 11 were administered last spring. 2

San José Unified School District Our success story! 3rd Grade In Language Arts, 65% of 3 rd grade students scored met and exceeded grade level standard In Math, 65% of 3 rd grade students scored met and exceeded grade level standard San José Unified 45% of 3 rd grade students in SJ scored met and exceeded grade level standard in Language Arts 44 % in math 38% of 3 rd grade students in CA scored met and exceeded grade level standard in Language Arts 40% in math California 3

Next steps with supporting our students in language arts: 1)AR Reading goal will be monitored and communicated with parents 2)K-2 nd grade early literacy lessons and progress will be closely monitored through CPAA, WPA and Lexia. 3)Intervention Specialist will provide extra support to our at-risk students by providing small group instruction targeting specific area 4)PD will be planned based around staff needs 5)Achieve3000 data will be closely monitored for 3-5 th students School district support in language arts: Pilot early literacy resources. Provide more professional development to support teachers in using novels and Achieve in grades 3-5. Continue focus on writing instruction using new curriculum (Lucy Calkins). 6

Next steps with supporting our students in Mathematics: PD will focus on supporting teachers in common math Intervention Specialist will provide small group instruction targeting 4 th and 5 th students in math Dreambox data will be monitored and goals will be set Grade Level meeting will follow the PLC structure (student centered) School district support in Mathematics: Continue use of DreamBox and provide ongoing professional development to help teachers effectively it. Piloting a new math curriculum. If recommended by the pilot committee a nd approved by the Board, professional development and initial implementation begins 2nd semester. Support teachers in using the math unit assessments data to inform their i nstruction. 7
