There were TWO Libraries The North The South

... and We Merged 2009 Average Age of Collection: 1993 Average Size of Collection: 26,933 Student Population: approx. 2, Average Age of Collection: 1999 Average Size of Collection: 27,443 Student Population: approx. 2,600

Architect Plans Before After Library

The Point? Persistence Communication Research o AAIM s about furniture, new libraries o We visited several libraries: Conway HS, Har-Ber HS, Benton HS, and Maumelle HS o Bob Pearlman - Chapter 6 in the book 21st Century Skills: Rethinking How Students Learn - New%20Learning%20Environments%20for%20 21st%20Century%20Skills.PDF New%20Learning%20Environments%20for%20 21st%20Century%20Skills.PDF

Our Plan for Packing A. Packing 1. Acquire boxes, labels, and packing tape 2. Weed - Weed - Weed 3. Replace old call numbers/clean-up catalog records 4. Begin with Reference, Classroom sets, Biographies, Nonfiction, and Fiction 5. Do an inventory scan as books are put in the boxes.

B. Furniture 1. AAIM s 2. Other libraries 3. Catalogs a. Comfortable seating b. Cafe tables and chairs c. Tables and chairs C. Computer Labs 1. Rooms 2. Computers

Plan versus Reality A. Packing o Not enough time o Too many books out o Boxes were not numbered correctly o Tried to do too much during move  Inventory equipment  Repair books/call numbers  Correct mistakes on catalog B. Furniture o Not enough time o Did not have a Plan B o Did not consider our Green requirements

What We Got Right 1.We communicated. 2.We had an administration who respected us and listened to us. 1.We labeled our boxes. (We would do it differently - next slide) 2.We asked for summer pay early. 3.We chose furniture that students like. 4.We learned from others' mistakes. a. Slanted book drop b. Large drawers c. Sink

Lounge Chairs & Loveseats - Hon Tall adj Chairs Upper Level - Scholarcraft Sled Base Conference Chairs - VS America Tables & Chairs - VS America Workroom Tables - Bretford Conference Tables - Hon Cafe Table & Chairs - KFI Office Furniture - Hon Furniture

Things We Would Do Differently 1.Begin one year earlier. 2.Label and number the boxes differently. 3.Use different colored paper and/or markers for each genre. 4.Pack boxes lighter. 5.Save classroom sets that had been used that year until the end. 6.Find out the Board's vision of how the new library would look. 7.Put book drop somewhere else and have a gate on one side of circ desk.

Stumbling Blocks Our regular job :) Common Core Getting books returned Bookshelves were not ordered in time Destruction of furniture Light switches
