3. Library Media Center Hours The media center is open from 7:30am to 2:30 pm. Students may come in to check out books from 7:30-8:30 am. Classes visit the media center from 9:00 am -2:00 pm. If you visit the media center without a teacher, you must have a library pass with your AR level on it.

4. Library Media Center Procedures for Students Use a shelf marker before taking any books off the shelf. Make sure you select books that are on your reading level. Red dot: 1 st grade, Green dot: 2 nd grade, Yellow dot: 3 rd grade, Blue dot: 4 th grade, Pink dot: 5 th grade You may only check out one book at a time. Remember that the library is a quiet zone. If you’re working in a group, make sure to use an inside voice. You must have the media specialist, or a teacher, put in the AR password for you. Enter and exit through the correct doors. Leave the library as you found it – clean up after yourself!

Library Media Center Services for Students Students may use the Media Center to: Check out books Use the computers for Accelerated Reader, locating materials, and conducting online research Work on group projects Have a quiet place to study or read The Media Specialist can help students: Locate materials by topic, genre, author, etc. Find “just right” books Research using print and online resources Cite sources when researching

6. Types of Books Fiction: Writing about events and characters that are not real. Types of Fiction: Fairy tales, fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, historical fiction, poetry, picture books Where to find Fiction Books: Fiction books are in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. The fiction shelves are labeled with letters. Popular authors and series of books are labeled on individual shelves.

7. Types of Books Nonfiction: Writing about facts or real events. Types of Nonfiction: Biographies, autobiographies, essays, speeches, newspapers, narratives of actual events Where to find Nonfiction Books: Nonfiction books are organized by subject using call numbers. The nonfiction shelves are labeled with numbers.

8. Finding a Book You can search for a book by author, subject, keyword, or title using our online catalog, Destiny. Use the dropdown menu on the library home page and select Destiny Library Search.Destiny Library Search. Select your school.

10. Finding a Book Scroll through your results to find available resources and their call numbers.

11. Accelerated Reader You will use Accelerated Reader to take reading practice quizzes after finishing a book. Use the dropdown menu on the library home page and select Renaissance Place.Renaissance Place

12. Accelerated Reader Click on “I’m a Student.” Enter your username and password.

13. Accelerated Reader If you forget your username, select the link below the login button. Select “Hunt Elementary School.” Type in your first and last name, then click search.

14. Accelerated Reader If you forget your Accelerated Reader password, ask your teacher or media specialist for help. If you enter the wrong password too many times, you will be locked out of AR.

15. Online Research When doing research online, make sure to keep the following things in mind: Who created this site? Is it a reputable institution like a university, museum, or government agency? What is the purpose of the site? Is it designed to inform, entertain, or to promote a product or idea? Can you find this information somewhere else? When doing research, always check more than one source. Do multiple sources have the same information? If you can find it in more than one place, it is more likely to be good information.

17. Library Media Center Procedures for Teachers You may check out 1 book per student in your homeroom. Put in requests for books/materials 2 days before you need them. If you would like the media specialist to teach/collaborate on a lesson, please provide 2 weeks advance notice. Requests for color printing must go through an administrator first. All materials to be laminated should be placed media center work room. All technology issues must go through the media specialist. The media specialist will fill out technology repair tickets. Teachers are responsible for returning all materials, including technology, to the media center. The media specialist will not come to your room to pick up materials.

18. Library Media Center Services for Teachers Teachers may use the Media Center to: Bring classes to check out books, research, or work on projects Administer STAR and Accelerated Reader tests Work with individuals or small groups of students Use the work room to prepare materials The Media Specialist can help teachers: Find resources for a specific lesson or topic Collaborate on lesson planning Teach lessons on library skills such as conducting online research, or citing sources Incorporate technology into lessons

19. Available Materials and Hardware The following materials are available for teacher checkout: Class sets of books (5-10 copies of the same book to use in small groups) A variety of educational CD’s and DVD’s Sets of leveled reading books Sets of books on specific topics The following hardware is available for teacher checkout: Student laptops Document cameras Digital cameras and video cameras Electronic voters TV’s and DVD players Overhead projectors
