PowerPoint Tutorial Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right Just a reminder to read all the instructions on a slide before doing what it says.

Basic Tools PowerPoint is very similar to Publisher when it comes to using tools. As you look at this screen you will see most of the same tools you see in Publisher, just in different places. Hopefully you also noticed that everything is in a frame like in Publisher. Click on the words Basic Tools above and you will see the frame around it and a cursor. Highlight those words and change them to Comic Sans Font, bold and shadow. Shadow is a new tool that is represented by S. It is used to make words stand out. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Basic Tools On the tool bar you will see all of the tools used to format words, I am going to assume you know how to use all of those. If you are paying close attention you saw a big A and a little a. These can be used to change the font size. To see how they work click on these words. Highlight all the words in this frame and click on the big A twice. You should see the font size change to 32. You want to try to make all words in a PowerPoint at least 32 font size. This makes it easier for people to read when you are giving a presentation. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Basic Tools Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right Since everything is in frames you need to know how to create a text frame so you can add words. Click Insert on the menu bar and choose Text Box. Your pointer will change and you should draw a text frame in the space below. Type at least two lines worth of text in the frame, you can just hit keys if you would like. Notice that how tall you want the frame doesn’t matter only how long you want it. As you type the frame will get taller.

Basic Tools Word art is also available in PowerPoint. You will see a blue, crooked A on the drawing toolbar below. Click on it and choose a style you want. Write a few appropriate words. Place the word art in the space below. Please resize it to take up all the empty space. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Basic Tools You will see the clip art guy on the tool bar below, click on it once and it will automatically go to the clip gallery. Quickly choose a piece of clip art and insert it in the space below. This can also be resized to fit in a designated space. I want you to place the clip art to the LEFT of this text frame. That means you will need to resize this text frame and then move the clip art to the empty space you created on the left. It should look something like the example below when you are done. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Basic Tools Now that you know some of the basics, you need to know how to make your slides look a little more interesting. Color is a big part of a PowerPoint presentation so lets start by learning how to add background color. Go to Format on the Menu Bar and choose background. This will open the background window. Click on the down arrow, choose More Colors, click on a color, OK and then apply (not apply to all). Do it now. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Basic Tools One color is still kind of boring so go to background again and click on the down arrow. This time choose fill effects. Choose a gradient fill effect you like and click apply because we only want it on this one slide and not all the slides. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Basic Tools Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right Notice there are other tabs, choose the texture tab. This gives you several choices of different textures to use as your background. Select one you like and click apply.

Basic Tools The third tab is the pattern tab. Select Format-->Backgrounds-- >Fill Effects--> and click on the pattern tab. Select a pattern you like in the two colors of your choice and click OK then Apply. Notice that patterns can make your words hard to read and certain color/pattern choices hurt your eyes. These do not always make the best backgrounds especially if you have words on the slide. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Inserting a Slide You have to know how to insert slides to create a slide show. You are going to Insert and create a few slides on your own. Click on the down arrow on the scroll bar to the right

Inserting a Slide To add a slide click on Insert on the menu bar and choose New Slide. This will open slide layout on the right side of your screen. Choose the Blank Slide. Use Word Art to add a title, your title is Practice Presentation. Create a text frame for your Name. Format this slide. That means change the font and size, add a background, add clip art, etc. When you are finished with that slide add another new slide. Choose Text & Clip Art as the layout. Your title is My Favorite Things. List at least 3 of your favorites and add a piece of clip art that goes with one of those. Format this slide also. Save this PowerPoint in your My Documents (U:) as Practice Presentation.
