Describe these two pictures of Napoleon

Rise of Napoleon Son of a lawyer Born in Corsica Education in military schools Not well accepted: lack of money, short, and spoke Italian Study Enlightened thinkers: Voltaire, Montesquieu and John Locke

Military genius Successful military leader Gained his soldiers confidence Used strategies of speed, deception, surprise attacks Intelligent and very persuasive Considered a hero in France by 1797 Stopped British invasion

Consul to Emperor Age of 30- took down the directory Had absolute power Made consul for life “I preserve the gains of the Revolution”

Policies Church at peace- Catholicism would be official religion of France then Church would not get the lands back from the revolution Napoleonic Code- Series of laws on equality, liberty, and property Set back for Women Capable of officials Rise to power by ability and rank (not family or royalty) Created new nobility

Dominate and preserver of his power Shut down the newspapers- WHY? No more protests allowed-WHY? Government control what people write and publish- WHY?

Expand France’s border At War with Russia, Austria, Great Britain. Make them pay for attacking France at her weakest time Alliances were formed by all European countries trying to fight against France- Good or bad? Look at Map: page 349 Spread idea of Nationalism to these Countries

Europe Endures Great Britain much more stronger and in the long run he could never invade it Each country in Europe started to gain Nationalistic feelings of “I am better than you are” Russia: Like Great Britain was unattainable. Napoleon tries to invade and loses big time 750,000 troops entered Russia: 15,000 and less came back Defeat at Waterloo last straw

What happens next? Napoleon exiled to St. Helena island France is hated by all of Europe European powers now arise and want to make sure that another Napoleon rises to power Militarism, Nationalism, and Alliances start to corrupt Europe Ideas of modernization do spread (new technology, life, and society emerges)
