1799 Took control of France by carrying out Coup d’ Etat Napoleon promised law & order. 1. Economic stability, 2. A fair tax system 3. A new social order (based on talent) 4. Religious Freedom 5. Public Education

6 Napoleon’s Empire Once Napoleon had France under his control he began his quest for a European Empire The Napoleonic Wars began after he declared himself emperor in 1804. Napoleon began leading and sending his armies to conquer neighboring countries in Europe.

7 Napoleon’s Empire Continued
Military success was due to 1. Leadership Style 2. Large Armies, and 3. Surprise Plans. The French Empire extended from France West into Spain and Portugal and through Germany into Poland and Russia to the East and into Italy in the South.

8 & Napoleon’s Empire was stopped at the English Channel.
Napoleon’s Losses Napoleon’s Empire was stopped at the English Channel. & In the Country of Russia Britain and Russia were two places he was never able to conquer and these fights help lead to his eventual defeat and overall Surrender.

10 Napoleon’s Defeat in Russia
Napoleon made a horrible mistake by attempting to attack and defeat Russia in the middle of Winter. His troops starved and froze to death !

11 Three mistakes Napoleon made that led to his downfall
The Blockade of Britain called the Continental System. No trade between Napoleon’s empire and Great Britain. The Continental System fails because European countries both wanted and needed to trade with Great Britain to keep their economy working. 2. The Peninsular War : in Spain and Portugal. 3. Invasion of Russia

12 Napoleon Surrenders Napoleon surrendered his throne and was exiled to Elba. He escaped from Elba in 1815, gathered his allies in Paris, and waged his final attempt at power During the HUNDRED DAYS .

13 THE HUNDRED DAYS AFTER ESCAPE from Elba Napoleon marched into Paris and gathered his army. June 18, 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo Napoleon was defeated and Exiled to St. Helena Island off the southern coast of Africa.

15 Congress of Vienna September 1814 through June 1815 Austria, Great Britain, and Russia MET IN VIENNA AUSTRIA TO PUT THE KINGDOMS OF EUROPE BACK TOGETHER. All Lands taken by Napoleon were returned to THE nations to which they belonged. ABSOLUTE MONARCHES WERE REINSTATED A BALANCE OF POWER WAS RE-ESTABLISHED IN EUROPE

** As Napoleon’s armies conquered other nations, his soldiers spread…… #1 ENLIGHTENMENT IDEAS & # 2. The new ideas of the French Revolution. Including the Slogan “Liberty Equality And Fraternity” THESE TWO THINGS CREATED AND SPREAD THE IDEA OF NATIONALISM
