1 The Napoleonic Era 9 th Grade Social Studies Spring 2013 Unit 7

2 The Big Picture  Napoleon Bonaparte seized power during the end of the French Revolution and made himself emperor.  His conquests sparked nationalistic feelings, which contributed to his downfall.  After exiling Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna tried to restore order and peace.

3 Why we study this unit:  In times of political turmoil, military dictators often seize control of nations.  The Congress of Vienna left a legacy that would influence world politics for the next 100 years.

13 Answers to the Essential Questions

14 1.What steps did Napoleon take to rise to power?  In 1799, Napoleon overthrew the Directory and set up the Consulate, a 3 man governing board.  Napoleon soon took the title First Consul, making him the dominant member.  By 1804, Napoleon had gained enough power to proclaim himself emperor.

15 2. How did Napoleon build an empire in Europe?  Napoleon controlled Europe through forceful diplomacy.  He annexed or added Holland and parts of Italy and Germany to his empire.  Napoleon placed his relatives on European thrones and forced countries to accept political alliances.

16 3. What events led to Napoleon’s downfall?  Nationalism caused people to view the French armies as foreign oppressors.  Napoleon suffers a disastrous defeat in Russia, losing most of his army.  Britain, Austria, Russia, and Prussia form an alliance against France and force Napoleon to abdicate.  Napoleon returns to power for 100 days but is finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.

What were the goals of the Congress of Vienna?  The goals of the Congress were shaped by Austria, Russia, Britain, and France.  To create a lasting peace, they wanted to establish a balance of power and protect the system of monarchy.  Territorial changes were made to prevent French expansion.  The principle of legitimacy was used to restore the monarchs that Napoleon had overthrown.
