3 I. The Rise of Napoleon A.Early Life 1.Born in Corsica – 1769 2.Educated in French Military schools - 1785 3.Not well like by peers – spoke Italian 4.Immersed himself in reading Philosophes and Military history

4 B. Early Military Success - 1796 1. Made a Brigadier General by the CPS 2. Invaded Italy and showed promise as a military leader 3. He displayed quick judgment and deception to win battles

Invasion of Egypt 1.The CPS gave him an Army to attack Britain 2.Napoleon chose to attack the British Colony of Egypt and threaten India (source of British wealth) 3.Napoleon had victory on land (Battle of the Pyramids) but defeat on the Sea (Battle of the Nile) 4.1799, Napoleon abandoned his Army and returned to Paris
