Active for Life

Physical Literacy Individuals who are physically literate move with confidence and competence in a wide variety of activities and environments that develop the whole person Adapted from Physical & Health Education Canada and Vicki Harber, University of Alberta

Active for Life Developing Physical Literacy: A Guide for Parents of Children Ages 0-12

Group Discussion What does Physical Literacy mean to you? What advantages does being physically literate have?

If a child misses out on learning fundamental movement skills, or has a negative physical education experience, they are unlikely to chose to take part in a sport activity that requires expertise in that skill Developing Physical Literacy: A Guide For Parents of Children Ages 0-12

Crossing Sectors Move & Play cards were created based on a need within the Be Fit For Life Network and the numerous requests we were receiving from various activity leaders. By creating this resource, we are able to provide assistance to activity leaders who are interested in integrating physical literacy into a variety of programs, activities, and environments. The Be Fit For Life Centre’s are currently working with partners in recreation, active living, education, health, early childhood, and sport to create a resource that meets many different needs.

Why Move & Play? Within our own Be Fit For Life Network to support our current work as well as transitional and part time staff. Various leaders who are looking to integrate physical activity into programs targeted at 3 – 12 year olds. Support for parent/volunteer coaches to allow integration of a variety of fundamental movement skills into practice and training. Energizer ideas for any group, including workplaces. By promoting fundamental movement skills in children and youth, we hope to help develop competent and confident movers who are ‘active for life’. Physical Literacy, just like reading and writing, children need to learn to move. orlife.ca

Testimonials They have reminded me how easy it is to get children active by only using there imaginations They are great for the age group your working with and for all the details for teaching about LTAD is great for examples for teaching other adults. I think the cards where helpful in getting the leaders to recognize that they are playing a big part in developing a child, and bringing fun and simple ways to do so to the front of their minds. I have shared them with many educators who are pleased with the card sections, especially the tips, cues and variations of the activities. Yes, the cards offer so much more in the way of activities and how to use equipment in different ways. Sometimes it is hard to be creative and this offers some help and ideas of how to get the most use out of our equipment. Absolutely. They add to our program in a success for all approach that allows everyone the chance to succeed.

Moving Forward What is the first thing that you are going to do when you get back to your school/organization? What message do you need to share with the children and youth that you work with?
